No heart beat at 6weeks

My friend who is 6 weeks and 6 days pregnant went in for her trans vaginal ultrasound today. The doctor said that he could see the embryo and the baby is the correct size for how far along she is. Unfortunately he could not see a heartbeat. He said for her to come back in a week and if there is still not heartbeat he will have to rule it out as a miscarriage. She has not had any bleeding and no more that the normal cramping. Is this normal? Is there still hope that her baby is going to be OK?

Well, my friend had her ultrasound today, the doctor searched and searched and could not find a heartbeat. The baby has not grown in size at all from last week. I am so sad for her.

Thank you all for your responses, I have a pretty good feeling that her baby is going to just fine. I am trying to keep her calm but I can't imagine how worried she is.

I actually went in for my first dr's appt and measured 6wks6days and he didn't see a heart beat then either. He gave me an appt for two weeks out but I ended up at the hospital 5 days later due to bleeding w/clots but no cramping. Anyway, I had another ultrasound done that night at the ER and they saw a healthy heart beat and everything looked good...they did rule it a "threatened miscarriage" as they do any time there is heavy bleeding during early pregnancy.  I followed up with my dr two days later and again my hcg level and the baby seemed fine and I actually got to see the baby's heart beat that time. The point is, you should remain positive and keep praying until you know for sure. No Dr on this planet can do more for your friend than God can. I think it's great that you're being so supportive...I know for a fact how scary it can be. So keep up the good work and I wish you all the best of luck! God Bless.

Yeah there has been a weird trend for doctors to say "miscarriage" before they know for sure. Poor girl having to go through all this and have a mean doc on top of it all.

Ok, that is what I told her too. She is so nervous, everyone already knows she is prego, I think she is a even more nervous because she had on abortion and then a miscarriage after that. I tried to ensure her that everything is going to  be fine and not to worry. Her doctor wasn't very reassuring, he told her that this isn't  normal and that he is worried...nice doc.

I've heard of people not seeing the heartbeat until 8 weeks. If the baby is developing every other way at the rate it is supposed to then I would say there is still hope!
