My son has it as well. I was super worried because it had happened just days after the umbilical cord had fallen off. It looks a lot worse when he pushes when he is gassy and whatnot, but I was told it was completely normal and should just resolve on its own. My doc said he has only ever had 1 case where it didn't clear up on it's own and the baby needed  minor surgery to fix it. He sees a lot of babies, so 1 case is nothing really. I had never even heard of this before until my son got it. He is 6 weeks and it's still there...I am hoping it resolves soon!! My doctor told me as long as I could push it back in (when he is not straining) then there is nothing to worry about.

My son had a herniated belly button when he was born, it went away on its own by the time he was 2 months old.

My son also had a herniated belly button when he was born. Our dr told use that they would operate unless it was causeing pain or if it hadn't gone away by the age of 2. Luckily his never caused any problems other then pertruding everytime he had to goto number 2. It gradually disappeared overtime and by age 2 it was completely gone. I am so sorry your little girl is experiencing pain from this. I know how hard it is to see our little pumpkins in pain. What did the dr recommend that you do?

thanks for responding she is 8 1/2 weeks. Im not sure if it is causing her pain for the last couple of days she has been really unsettled, she wont let me put her down and she doesn't seem to be eating as much as she normally does, tonight she was inconsolable, even when i was holding her i ended up giving her some baby panadol and that seemed to help. The ER doc was concerned as she hasn't gone number 2 in 4 days. usually she goes anywhere from 2-5 times a day. I am hoping this is something that will resolve its self cause i don't want her to be in any pain.

I believe as Cheyenne has said that they wont do surgery until a child is older unless it is causing a great deal of pain. In most children it goes away on its own but always has a chance at reacurring becuase of the muscle that is seperated that it slips through in the first place. I had umbilical hernia repair sugery last Nov, But as an adult they wanted to do surgery and put some kind of mesh behind it so it never popped back through. How old is your DD?

My son had a herniated belly button. It went away on its own when he was about a year old. We were told they would not do surgery on it unless it had not gone away by 2 or 3.
