is this a viable pregnancy?

Last Tuesday I found out that I was pregnant. I'm not sure what made me do the test as I had been bleeding the weekend before. Anyway the test was positive. i went to the dr on the Wednesday to get this confirmed and she sent me straight to A+E when I told her about the bleeding. I have also had really bad stomach cramps and am still spotting.  I spent the day on the gynae ward and had blood tests and an exam. I got a phone call from the dr that night saying that the blood tests showed high hormone levels and that she wanted me to have a scan done Friday (today). I went for the scan this morning and no foetus or heart beat was detected. They've put me at 6 wks 5 days pregnant. The doctor said that they would normally expect something to show by now but that they will repeat the scan in a week,. When I pushed her she said that it was unlikely for this to be a viable pregnancy. I asked what would happen and she said that they would expect me to miscarry at home and to contact the hospital if the bleeding becomes more than I can cope with. I was told at my original appointment that I would have a repeat blood test to check for hormone level changes but this dr said that wasn't necessary and wouldn't give any new information. She was quite blunt throughout and I've ended up coming away with more questions than what I went in with. Does anyone know if there is any chance for this pregnancy? Am I going to be waiting in limbo for evermore just waiting to miscarry? I've been given co-codomol for the pain (although it was suggested that as this was not a planned pregnancy, that I would be fine using over the counter pain killers!) Just feeling very lost and not at all sure of what is happening to me :-( If anyone can help at all it will be much appreciated.

Hi back again. Well I went to the hospital yesterday for my second scan. I wasn't hopeful in the slightest as I don't feel pregnant at all and the bleeding had continued for about another four days. Two weeks ago I was having backache and feeling sick quite a lot of the time and now I don't feel anything. When I went in for the scan they sent a doctor in too, which made me think that they were expecting it not to be viable pregnancy. They were wrong. They found the baby and a heartbeat straight away. They've given me an aprroximate due date of November 7th. They've put down my problems to a threatened miscarriage and are going to keep a close eye on me. I've still got to get to the magic three months but my partner and I have decided to take each day as it comes. I keep going from being excited one minute to petrified the next but I've got this far. Thanks for all of your help x

I would go in next week for the second Ultrasound. If the doctor's are right that you are supposedly 6 weeks 5 days (almost 7 weeks along) than I would be concerned. At the same time, I wouldn't lose all hope either, the dating could have been off a little depending on the quality of the Ultrasound machine that was used. I know for me that we were able to detect a sac, a fetal pole, and a heartbeat when I was only 5 weeks 6 days along. The bleeding you have been having is what concerns me more than the actual Ultrasound. If you feel you want a second opinion from another doctor than by all means that is your right and I would seek one out. Otherwise just go in for the scan in a week and see what happens. I will keep you and your baby in my prayers.
