Pot and Pregnancy.

Hi,
I am currently 20 weeks pregnant and I am ecstatic! I have so many things for my baby who is going to be a girl <3 my husband and I are beyond happy. Here is my question, before I became pregnant I was a moderate pot smoker, for anxiety and horrible insomnia (I had my medical card) I have always had irrigular periods so missing three in a row was no big deal. Well I went to the ER for cramps and BAM I'm 13-14 wks pregnant. I was so happy because we had been trying. So of course I started prenatal care and went to a doctor and have been having regular checkups. I smoked moderately before I became pregnant about 1-2x per week not a lot just enough to make me fall asleep usually, I had a misscarriage previously due to my stress and anxiety, It wasn't a matter of being addicted or anything I just wanted to tapper off so my stress didn't skyrocket and something happen to my baby, my doctor agreed this is best. So at 16 weeks I completely stopped and have been clean ever since. I quit my job per my husbands request and am now happy and stress free. My baby is healthy and happy and a kicker! My question is that I have had so many people scare me and say CPS will take my baby and she won't be clean at birth. I have had no history of drug use(i've never had anything but cannabis) and I have never even been to jail. I am also located in San Diego, so I am not sure of the drug testing policy's in California. Please don't give me rude comments only helpful info. I know that it is not an ideal situation but now that I have stopped I'm going to keep it that way. Any help is appreciated! Thanks :)

They investigated for three months, urine tests randomly and had a back-up legal guardian just in case. But this was in PA, and she stopped smoking for the time being so they ended the investigation after that three month period. Im not sure if they do any sort of follow up, I don't really speak to the person anymore who that happened to (for other reasons)

Exactly! My cousin was prescribed zanax and zoloft and her baby ended up having  a heart defect and being born so premature. It's so sad what passes for legal these days.

And I'm with you on that one. People taking vicodin for headaches and zanax for anxiety but weed?? Oh hell no horrible ;)

To ease your mind maybe try looking into the laws for your area. I'm with shelly in fl and its illegal. But I was also under the impression in Cali you could legally use this substance. I think since your so early you shouldn't have any issues. But maybe having some facts would help relieving your stress on the matter. Ive never smoked so not sure to many facts on the matter. But can understand your worry :) congrats on your pregnancy.

Thank you Bree!! Yes there are so many dispensaries around here. I would never touch it again and put my baby at risk, She is far more important than anything. <3

I was writing all that before I saw any comments, and meant if someone decides to be rude about it, if their from other states then don't listen

Do you mind my asking what happened with the girl and her baby? I hope they didn't take her away :( They will prescribe antidepressants and horrible drugs to pregnant but cannabis is what they're worried about.

I'm from California too. Where we know that weed is pretty much legal. And the ob/gyns don't mind it while pregnant. Their is about  10 weed despensories (stores) within 5 minutes where I live. They won't take your baby if you have already quit. It will not be in your system by then, trust me. The hospitals do always check after birth. If mj is in the babies system when born then yes, cps will go to your house to see living conditions but not take your baby away. Make sure you don't even take the littlest hit within 50 days before your due date and you should be fine. I got my script for the first time in 2009 when I was pregnant. Any other comments from people from other states won't be valid because weed is considered a "drug" other places. Good luck to you

Thank you! I'm not sure if they prescribe it...maybe shady Cannabis doctors but I doubt a OB/GYN would. It is legal here but I also know CPS is very relaxed here. My sister in laws have had there children taken away for  HORRIBLE living conditions, and yet they are still just as bad and every time they visit they do nothing :(

Oh yeah it will be out of your system well before you deliver. :)

No...if you stopped it will be out of your system by the time you give birth. They will possibly test, but if your clean then you have nothing to worry about. I do know someone who has CPS involved but that's because she smoked up until she gave birth and the baby also had it in her system. Anyway, Congratulations!!!

But I am also in FL, a non legal state. So I'm not exactly sure how the handle things over in Cali.. Don't some doctors prescribe marijuana medically to pregnant ladies for morning sickness?

I would say you're still early enough in your pregnancy that even if the hospital were to test you, it won't be in your system or babies by the time you deliver. However, I doubt that since you legally smoked and your DR knew about it that they won't even bother testing you (:
