Pre-Pregnancy Preparation

Folic Acid alone  or Prenatal Vitamins??

In preparation for getting pregnant, I am confused on what is best in terms of vitamin supplements. My doctors says to take a folic acid supplement so I have started to take 1 mg. per day. Some of my female friends tell me that I should be taking the prenantal vitamins already to prepare but I am not taking  their word for it as maybe too much of a good thing isn't good. I try and eat a balanced diet although with my busy schedule it is sometimes difficult.

I want to give myself the best shot possible at having a successful pregnancy and would appreciate an educated professional's advice on the best choice.

Thank you.

No problem Palanaki, I trust whatever you decide, it will be the best decision for you.

Sc1, Thanks for your congratulations! I am a bit worried right now though because my cramping stopped and I have no symptoms whatsoever. I only found out a couple of days ago so I am trying to stay positive but I had so much movement and cramping in the last few days and all of a sudden, stop! !!! Maybe in a week I will be struck with nausea! God willing! I seriously want the nausea! Good luck at your doctors appointment next week!

Signed, the girl who is reserving her happiness for when it's totally merited!

Thank you for sharing your experience. My first response was to go ahead with the amnio, but then you know how it goes.  You start reading about it and all that, then you freak out on all the "what ifs".  It's such a mind blower.  I think I would do it as a matter of preparation.  My husband would need that time to adjust as well.  And then my aunt called me and was saying how she went into labor after she had her amnio done, so my panic button was hit again.  Anyway, the risk is less than 1%, and I usually am the type that HAS TO KNOW.  I think I'm trying to convince myself that I don't need to know so that I don't have to do the amnio, but the truth is I'm going a little nuts here.  And I was worried about the baby being injured during the process, so thanks for sharing that little bit of info with me as well.
I'm waiting for the dr's office to call me with the actual results, as I didn't bother to ask when I spoke to the doctor.  I was kinda shocked, so I couldn't even think straight.  Anyway, I called them after I read your post, so I should know shortly.
Thanks again for sharing your experience with me.  It really helped.

So, how are you feeling? :)

I can comment on your scenario as this happened to me when I was pregnant with my daughter. I decided to go with the amnio, I considered the risks but it's a personal choice. I can't remember what my AFP reading was but I know that when I went for genetic counselling, it was the most depressing appointment! The rate of false positives is very high with those tests but I couldn;t bare not to know because i t's just the type of person I am. I coiuldn't go through the entire pregnancy not knowing. Like you,  there was a good chance my daughter was normal but without the amnio it wasn't conclusive.

The amnio procedure was scary but wasn't painful and I got to watch the whole thing on screen and the needle was far, far away from my baby! The three week wait for the results was probably the worst thing about the entire process!

I really can't promote amnio or no amnio, it's such a personal choice. You're either the type of person that has to know or you just accept whatever comes with grace and hope for the best. Chances are, your baby is fine though!

I also had my DH to consider, see he wanted to know and didn't want the shock when the baby was born. Thankfully I agreed or there would have been an awesome fight!

Please be positive! What was your result?, it may bring back memory of what mine was!

Okay guys.  I'll keep this short, but I have to vent on this a bit or I'll go crazy.

I got a call from my doctor last Friday, and she left a message with my husband regarding my AFP screen.  So, I called her Monday to find out what the deal was, and it turns out my screen came back saying that I needed genetic counceling and further testing to confirm whether or not my baby has Down's Syndrome.  Initially, I was depressed.  But a baby is a blessing, no matter what, right?  So, I'm opting not to have the amniocentesis, as there's a slight chance that may cause more problems than neccessary.  I know this is not an "end-of-the-world" situation, but I'm worried about my baby.  To be clear, there's a good chance that my baby is healthy, but if I don't do the amnio, I won't know for sure.

Does anyone have any advice for me on the subject?
