my first and second trimester my doc didn't do to much either. the nurse weighed me and took pee tests of course then my ob would come in measure my tummy (he started doing that half way through my second trimester) and then would listen for their heartbeats...which he's been doing since i was 13 weeks (which is about when they first see pregnant women at my ob office) once i hit 25 weeks and they were seeing me weekly they started doing cervical exams at every appointment along with everything else. (that's when they found out i was 2 cm dialated...i'm now up to 2 1/2 cm at 27 weeks) and of course my initial appointment they did the whole gynocological exam....swabs and all.
Well, thinking back, I do remember the appts. being very quick. There really isn't much to do those first 6 months or so. However, if you have questions the dr. should be taking the time to answer them. Did he ask you if you had any questions or concerns? Did he check for a heart beat? I know the first appt. for pregnancy they do a pap smear and check for the heartbeat if you are far enough along. I would say if he has done these things, and especially taken the time to ask you if you have any questions....then you are probably not alone in experiencing this situation. I remember going and being like, "This is it?" But then saying to myself, "Well, he asked me if I had any questions and I didn't, so I guess he isn't going to sit here and chit chat with me...."
He might have other soon-to-be mommies waiting, and maybe some in labor....I would say if he was cold and you felt totally blown off, I would follow your heart and change doctors...but if he asked you if you have any questions, I would stay. There are some excellent OB/GYN's out there, but there are also some that lack bedside manner until it is time for delivery....I had that with my first. I had to have my son delivered by my reg. doctors partner. I hated him with a passion...he wasn't giving me what I wanted (I was in a lot of pain) and threatened to take him c-section if I didn't start pushing correctly. He then walked out and I started pushing. After I had Logan, he told me to scootch over and he layed on his side in the bed with me (sounds creepy, but he was really nice) and said, "I'm sorry I said that to you, but I needed you to focus...you did an awesome job!" Logan was 8lbs 1oz and 21 inches long. I am 5'2 and petite, so he was shocked his comment worked and I delivered just fine. Sorry for the long winded reply, but switching might put you in the same boat...stay with him if you like him.
Good luck!
Heather
Before I was about 15weeks, all the dr. did was come in talk for a few seconds and that was it. After I was 15weeks then he started useing the doppler and then just talking for a few seconds. Now that I am farer we do the doppler and he measure my belly. But even now Iam in and out with in 15-20mins. I spend more time with the nurse that I do thew dr. doing the weight and blood pressure and her testing my pee.........
I've only had my first one and I was only 5 weeks at the time. She gave me a Vaginal Exam and a Physical. Gave me a book and some papers on having a baby. Than she sat down with my husband and I for about 30 minutes to talk about any questions or concerns I might have. Than she scheduled me for an U/S and my next appointment.
Today is my second Prenatal appointment and I was wondering the same thing! I will be 8 weeks on Thursday and I was curious what shes going to do. I really want another U/S because I didn't get any pictures last time so I'm hoping she schedules me for one really soon. But I'm guessing she'll check my uterus, maybe an exam and sit down with us and talk. Or maybe go over our last U/S. But I'm curious too!
