Question- What is your opinion of Marajuana or Weed during pregnancy?

Ok, no one freak out or start yelling at me. I just want opinions... What do you think about weed during pregnancy to treat Nausea?

The reason I ask is I've been on SEVERAL midwife's sites that reccommend weed or marajuana as a way to help perk up the appetite. Not enough to get completely baked, but enough to relax you and help your appetite.  and YEA, I know it's illegal... but I'm one of those who think it should be legalized so that at least ppl won't be getting it laced or whatnot. (and it'll lose some of it's appeal to younger generations)

Also, my friend was talking to me today, and she had the same issues I've had with my pregnancy: Bad M/S during the first 1/2 of pregnancy, and lingering m/s or no appetite during the rest of her pregnancy. She had a problem eating enough and putting on weight.

Her NURSE at her doctors office suggested it to her, and she said it helped alot. And it turns out her mother also did it a little for the same reasons when pregnant with her. (like 2X a week or so only in the AM to boost hunger)

I have NOT smoked it during pregnancy, but have seriously considered it. Yes, I know the risks to MY lungs, but to my knowledge there have been NO studies showing harmful effects to the baby. and I've looked.

BTS~ You know my doctor would NOT prescribe phenergan for some reason??? I requested it and he said no "too risky"... it really confuses me how some doctors will ok certain meds saying it's safe, and then say others aren't.... and then another docor will say the original med is unsafe. lol

I've been taking a prescription medicine since early in my pregnancy for morning sickness, it's called Metoclopramide... I don't know the brand name. but it makes me SUPER sleepy (more than weed ever did... before I got pregnatn I smoked it like 6 times over 4yrs. )

Chitten~ The week before I got my BFP was new years... and yea it's BAD but during New years and the day after I drank 1/3 of a 750 ml. bottle of Vodka... BAD Idea because I got so sick that second day (not alchahol poisoning... but just hangover) so I know what you mean about doing bad stuff before getting pregnant... I still eat RAW sushi from a grade A place near my home... about 1X a week sometimes.

Brittny~ I completely agree with your view of 1 hit or so for nausea and getting baked being different. I think that with the babies who've shown to show "withdrawal" etc. it's from mothers who smoked it chronically (no pun intended) every day or even every other day in regular amounts (not one or two hits)... It's just like 1 glass of wine being ok every so often and alcoholism creating FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome) it honestly depends on the frequency and amount ... at least that's what I'm learning so far with my research into it.

Marcus's Mommy~ I've actually had M/S for the last 5 months. :) and I completely understand about not doing anything wrong and having somethign wrong with the baby. my son has my skin problem and D/S... He's healthy and growing fine so far and I'm monitored closely just to make sure of that fact. :)

babydreams~ I completely respect your opinion. I knew my post would get mixed reviews definitely so I'm not offended at anyone for what they're saying.. I hope I'm not offending anyone either by posting such a contraversial post.

As for the Smoking of weed. I'm all for the other types of medicinal uses other than smoking.. I actually think it may be safer (like also using a vaporizor.) I'm doing as much research as I can before I make my final decision on actually smoking it. (probably within a week)... what some of you may not know, is in the last 2 months I've developed a BAD symptom in which my legs swell when I stand alot... and  I get blisters and they get infected... well that I can handle, but also, especially inthe AM my blood flow has been screwed up to the point that when I stand in the mornings or go from standing to sitting/ vice versa... my lower legs below my knees feel as tho they're on FIRE. cool water, lotion.. etc. does NOT work. So I'm now on Vicoden every 4 hrs as needed for the pain. I was wary of taking it at first, but if I didn't I'd be bedbound most of the time. it *****.... I'm gonna stop taking it the last month at least of my pregnancy. And I don't need it EVERY day, but about every other day. and honestly that scares me more than weed would simply because I don't want him being addicted or depressed at birth with me using it that often, rather than weed 1-2X a week. :)

But I know that the bottom line is : Do I want to deal with an accepted "medical" drug even with the known risks, or possibly use a partially medically accepted drug (depends on the doctor you speak to.. esp here in Cali.) and no know the EXACT risks associated with it??

I honesly haven't decided, and I know I'll choose the right thing for him and I.... (I just dont look forward to these symptoms with my other pregnancies.. the m/s OR the leg pain. :(  ) more than likely I'm gonna email a couple of the doctors near here in LA who know more facts about it (yea they're supporters) but they can give me they're honest view on the risks with it too. :)

Yes for Cancer patience or non preg. women.

No for pregnancy.

If morning sickness for 2 months is the worse thing life can give you then you are lucky. If something did go wrong you will always blame yourself and you will never know for sure. Looking in your childs eyes will break your heart.

I did nothing out of the norm and my child needed surgery at 18 months. It scared me that I wasn't sure I could have more children. They called it a fluke.

Morning sickness isn't the end of the world, don't take unnecessary drugs/medications. There are two lives.

I don't judge people who smoke or use, and think everyone has a right to do what they want. It's their own choice and they have to live with it. I just think that with all things, no matter what they are, what you put into your body you are putting into your baby's body. Your baby is solely dependent upon you to create a safe and healthy environment for optimal growth and nourishment for 9 months. Personally I don't want my baby doing drugs, and the way I see it, the few months of nausea (and trust me, I had hyperemesis gravidarum so I know how miserable it is!!) is better than watching my child have a lifetime of health problems. Yes, effects of marijuana on babies is inconclusive, but why take the chance?? It's 9 months out of a lifetime - not even a drop in the bucket. Being sick for a few months is hardly a sacrifice in my mind, for the blessing and joy of having a child. Just something to think about. Best wishes w/the rest of your pregnancy!

I have a friend who lives in Vancouver bc so pot is legal there in small amounts. She does not smoke it but during her pregnancy she had Severe M/S she had to call in sick to work a lot and her dr suggested it.   she smoked just a little bit two or three times during 4th and 5th month and it would take away the m/s for a few hours and she was able to eat.

Her dr said it doesn't pass through the placenta I don't know about that and I haven't seen anything to tell me differently.

There is a difference between taking one hit to reduce m/s and getting totally baked out of your mind for hours.  If it works and your willing to try it then I say go for it. I personally don't see a problem with taking one small hit once or twice a week if it helps you be more comfortable and not laying on the bathroom floor not able to move. I don't agree with smoking it all day every day the whole pregnancy.

Here is what I found on how marijuana could effect the baby:
**May slow the growth of the baby
**Increase the risk of premature delivery
**After birth the baby could have withdrawal like symptoms; cry alot and tremble
I found this here if you want to look from March of Dimes:
http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/159_4427.asp

It seems that if you were to smoke marijuana to boost your appetite yet it says marijuana slows the growth of the baby, that defeats the whole purpose doesn't it??  I think so--it seems to me like that is just an excuse to smoke pot.  I am definitely not one to judge, but my opinion is NO.  There are other ways of dealing with nausea and most women just get through it.
