I used a drop down and had no problems. It's actually really hard to make it drop down. Check it over and decide what you want to do.
I agree with buying new products just to have some piece of mind, I was just given the items from family members who wanted to help out & didn't want anyone to think I was being stuck up or like I don't appreciate the help. I didn't think it would be appropriate to turn down free items, specially from family members.
Sadly you can't check if a car seat has been in an accident. That's why I personally would never accept a hand me down carseat. It's not worth my babies safety. That's one of those things you should buy new.
Not sure how to check on the car seat thing, but I will say I was offered a drop side crib and turned it down flat. There's just too many fatalities and seeing as they are illegal to be sold, well that's enough for me. I'm the same with car seats. Unless I know and trust the person I had gotten it from,I won't take it. Garage sales are a no no for baby items like that to me because you will never know the care it has had, if its been in a wreck, or if its been recalled. You could be shelling out money for a faulty product and not know it. Its better to buy a new one, keep the receipt, and register the product online so you will be one of the first to know if something is wrong with it. That's just my two cents though.
How do u check if a car seat has been in an accident? Sorry for all the questions, I'm a FTM & just worried.
They are only unsafe because people couldn't assemble them properly and they side rail was kicking out. I heard though from someone that they just called the manufacturer and they sent them the hardware to make it so the side rail wouldn't/couldn't drop down. But I am still using the crib that I was in when I was a baby because its perfectly fine and I will be careful with assembly to make sure its assembled properly. My sisters kids were all in it and had no problems at all. Its almost a 30 year old crib and is sturdy as can be. Honestly its another way for the government to get into our lives and have a little more control over everything. I understand the safety part but honestly follow the directions on assembly and they have been using drop side cribs for YEARS!! With no problems.
For the car seat you just have to make sure it wasn't in an accident and also there is an expiration date on the bottom of the car seat that you can go by to see if its still good.
You can go to the site of the brand of crib and you can also google crib recalls and you should find out there.
I do know that is illegal to sale a drop rail drib now because they are deemed unsafe. That being said...I have one. My husband is a building contractor and he rebuilt one side so that it doesn't drop and is fixed. TO prove it would work he got in the crib and bounced up and down on the rails like a gorilla :)
I don't think Walmart does the reimburesment on all carseats...just a few brands. You will have to call and see if yours is covered. You can check the manufacturers website for recalled seats. I did that with my sons second carseat. I bought his infant one new but the second one was form my nephew.
