Safe to lose weight while pregnant?

Hi, I just found out that I am 5 weeks pregnant with my first child. I would like to lose some weight before I start getting that big baby belly. Is it safe to lose weight if I'm pregnant? If so, what is a healthy rate to lose it? Thanks so much.

First of all congrats on your pregnancy :]
Second, like the previous poster said, losing weight while pregnant is harmful to the baby because as you get rid of the fat deposits, toxins are released into the body being harmful to the baby. What you can do is just make wise eating choices. I was overweight when I became pregnant and since I was very scared of getting much bigger I cut out all soda and juices, sugary sweets and chips, and it helped. At the beginning of the pregnancy I did lose weight and maintained that weight till the end where I did gain the 15lbs that my doctor wanted. Those 15 pounds were all baby, once I delivered I actually weighed less then when I started, and then breastfeeding helped me lose more weight.

Oh hon.  Yeah I agree with misslollipop.  You are going to have so much more going on here very shortly that losing weight will be the last thing you will want to start doing.  You might lose weight because you are too nauseous to eat anyway for a few weeks.  Your body is going to change so much in the next 8 months that it won't matter if you lose weight now or not because you are going to put on weight in places you never thought was possible.  I am 29 weeks PG and I am already planning my diet when I have this baby.  Just try to enjoy the food now and worry about weight loss when the baby comes when it is healthy for you to lose the weight.

pregnancy is so hard on the body and it needs everything to grow the baby that trying to lose weight before the belly appears can do more harm than good and could cause complications so i wouldn't advise it just go with the flow as you are going to put weight on anyway with. Congrats on your pregnancy
