When I was induced with my daughter back in 2011. They just hooked me up to all monitors, started the pitocin, they checked me to see how much dilated I was. Then like a few hours later my doctor came in to pop my water bag. Once he did that, contractions came hard. I did it all natural, didn't have the epidural only got the medication through the iv. By the time I knew it, I was already having my daughter. For being a ftm at the time and being induced I was only in labor for 4-5 hours.

Once youre in your gown and settled in bed they will hook up your iv and slide a towel under your rear. They bust out the stirrups and use a hook that looks like a skinny version of a crochet hook. They insert that to latch the bag of water inside of you (it should feel the same as a cervical check as far as pressure). Once your water breaks they will measure how far dilated you are. They will hook up the pitocin to your iv and start it at a 2. For me they increased it by two every 30min so they bumped it to 4 then 6 then 8 etc. Pitocin does not go past 20 and women typically go into "pushing" between 16 and 18. Every 2hrs a nurse will come in and check your dilation/effacing and give you an idea how well you progress. Every time they increase your pitocin the contractions will get stronger. They recommend asking for an epi around 6/7cm if you want one but before that they have a liquid they can out in your iv that helps dull contractions for a short time. Dont forget to tell them when you feel like you need a towel change from your water breaking. It will continue to gush out through your whole delivery and it can stink and feel uncomfortable very quickly. Dont be afraid to ask. Also the hook they break your water with can/will put a little scratch on your babys head. Dont worry its normal and happens all the time. Hope this helps!
