Seeing/Hearing baby's heartbeat

Hello and thank you for reading.  My husband and I experienced our first miscarriage on December 25, 2007.  In January when my cycle didn't come I took another EPT and it showed positive for pregnancy again.  I went to the Dr. on 2.5.08 who did his own v/ultrasound and the pic showed just a sac with nothing in it.  He had me come back on 2.19.08 and did another ultrasound that showed the sac grew but still nothing in it.  The office took blook on 2.19 and on 2.21 and the result was a "slight" drop in pregnancy harmone.  Here is the kicker!!!  He sent me to a "formal" U/S on 2.25 and the lady found a egg and a fetus and measured the baby at 6 weeks.  My Dr. has based the age of the baby to be 8w5d based on when my period should have began but says he could be off based on my ovulation being off from miscarriage the month before.  OKAY - so the question is the ultrasound lady that surprised me with finding a egg and fetus couldn't find a heartbeat.  Could it bee that I am only 6 weeks and the heart hasn't kicked into gear yet? Could it have been the positioning of the baby?  Etc.  We have a healthy 18 month old and just want to better understand U/S differences and timeframe to hear heartbeat.  Thank you.

I have had no cramping or bleeding.  I still have cravings and have been having pains in my breast.  With my first baby i didn't really pay attention to all of these signs as we were 10 weeks at the first Dr. appointment and everything was smooth sailing from there.  Do you know what week we should see a heartbeat on the u/s?  I have another appointment in three weeks which the baby will be 11w5d per my Dr. and 9 weeks per the ultrasound lady?

you might be to early to see the heartbeat, dont give up hope until you have at least two more u/s, unless you start cramping and bleeding, or your blood tests show otherwise.  But to me it sounds like you might just be border line 5-6wks.   So keep your chin up and love that baby you have..  I cant wait to have my baby.. So good luck..
