Sick and pregnant!

Hey I am 12 wks 5 days today, I have a really severe cold and I took robitusson for 3 days probably took at most 10 teaspoons of it. My question is online it said a certain ingredient in medicines you should always avoid when pregnant. That ingredient was in the medicine I took. It said It can cause birth defects and although there is a small risk the risk is higher if you are a smoker which I am. I stopped taking it right away and got SAFE medicine from my hostpitals pharmacy. Do you think my baby will be ok? Ihave no idea when I will have my next ultrasound.

Stop taking robitussin DM or CF. I looked up the information all the robitussin products and they are category c which doctor don't like preg patients taking but it can be ok if risks don't out weigh the benefits. I was taking a medicine for reflux that was a category c and changed to a category b which is safer in preg and she told me I didn't need to change for those reasons. Your baby is probably fine no harm done. Just don't take anything without checking with a doctor.  Call ur primary they could help you when your sick and preg you don't need OB to help you with this. If you went to the ER it would be an ER doctor that treats you not OB bc its not a preg problem they are dealing with. Hope this helps.  Just some advice from an ER nurse perspective.

I received a list of what is safe to take during preg by OB. Plain robitussin was safe but they did not recommend DM or any other ones. Which one did u take?

I called the hostpital right away and told them my concern and they were supposed to have a nurse call me and they never did. I can't meet or talk to my new doctor until after march 21 when I can make my 1st appointment with her. I changed doctors from off the military base to on base so they are making me go to a 1st time moms class on the 21st then I can make my 1st appointment. So until then I'm on my own :(

Talk to your doctor or midwife. Be prepared to tell the medicine you took and what dose you took and for how long. There's nothing you can do about it now so try to relax. But do let you're provider know asap.
