Speech Issues...

So when are kids suppose to start talking?? I nanny a little girl who will be 2 in December. She doesn't really talk. She can say, hi, mom, dad, no, and happy...I think that's it..should her parents be concerned? I've been trying to get her to say small words but she just looks at us like..No...or thinks we are punishing her...Help?

The child's vocabulary will progress overtime, by age three they are able to combine more words.

Thats normal. My son is the same way. Usually by three they have a decent vocabulary.

I agree every child develop learning skills at their own pace, you can't rush a child into learning something they just aren't ready for . Just because you see a 1 year old saying words that a 2 year old doesn't means nothing . . . Never compare other children to eachother!!! Also build up her self-esteem , let her know that she can do it . . . & not force anything upon her. Put her into some sort of schooling where she's around other kids maybe & she'll pick up the things that she needs to know . My daughter learned basic things at home , such as her Abc's , 123's, colors, animals, & stuff like that through flash cards and videos. Children learn by seeing , & please don't think she has a learning disability!

Aww. Every child is different.  My daughter (now 7) didn't rly talk til almost 3 and walked at almost 2. I thought something was wrong but doc said every child learns different. .my son however talked a storm and walked by 1!! I wouldn't worry just yet. Just keep repeating words and she will catch on. Try drawing a picture on flash cards with the word so she doesn't give u that "im being punished? " look...
