Sunbeds whilst pregnant???

Is it safe to use sunbeds?? Im 13 weeks pregnant, live in Scotland and look like a milk bottle, my aunt says they do no harm but does anyone know if there is any scientific evidence that says they do????

Also, was thinking of colouring my hair with a dark permanant rinse. Is this safe?????

Oh and i asked my hairdresser a few weeks back bout hair dye. Its fine to use nowa days. He said that when the baby comes its best not to dye it coz your nutrients have gone from your hair, He said 3 months onwards is fine.

There is a warning about being pregnant in England and using sunbeds. DONT DO IT. UV rays. Radiation. Heat. Would you really want to risk it to JUST have a tan? I'm sorry, but i REALLY dont think you should use them, im glad i didn't go with DH when he went before i found out.

no no no. to tanning..i know the place where i went before i got pregnant has a sign that says if your preggo you should not tan, i just wouldnt want to risk it..so im slowly going back to my white white self hahaha..

and as for hair colors, the kind in the box is WAY worse then at a salon. (im a manager of a hair salon so i know this stuff like the back of my hand!)  with those box colors at home you have no idea what you are getting, you dont know what the level of developer is or what not. if you go into a salon and get it done and tell them you are pregnant (how far along are you? during the first trimester we recommend just doing a foil so it doesnt get onto the scalp)..but there are gentler hair colors that we have in salons such as color glosses, semi and demi permanent hair color. if i were you i would go for the demi permanent thats what i have been doing with mine, it covers and lasts a long time, not as long as a permanent hair color, but it is way less harsh..hope that helps!!

Isn't there a tie between folic acids and tanning (meaning tanning can somehow deplete the amounts of folic acids in your system)?  I think I read something about that in one of my pregnancy books, I'll have to look that up.

yeah i dont kno why anyone would risk tannning while pregnant. i dropped getting my tans actually a couple of weeks before i found out i was pregnant. (just had not gotten around to going) im a nut about the temp of my bath water. im so use to taking a super hot bath but now i swear theres more cold than hot water in the tub ; ( because i dont want it too hot for him. i was told tanning beds are ok (not from a doctor tho) as long as your in there for a couple of mins. but if your in there for a couple of mins it NOT even worth spending the money to get a tan. and i would think it would still be too hot on the baby and too bright as well. i wouldnt risk it

after reading all this it has really educated me in sunbeds....especially during pregnancy....I really had no idea how bad it would be...I've just always heard it wasn't bad...so even though I didn't post the question I'm glad I read the answers and got some info for myself.

From what I've hear there is no ties between hair dye and birth defects. However, they say the color may not take as well beging pregnant.

As for tanning beds, I would stay away from it. It's NOT good for you when you're not pregnant, I would assume it's not any better if you are pregnant. They also say that the baby can see light from outside the womb. Could you imagine how bright that would be to the baby.

1). You could boil baby
2). You're at higher risk of having skin cancer

I personally do not promote tanning beds, period. My mom died of cancer and I would NOT want anyone else to have to go through that. I am really incredibly passionate about this so I won't say anything else. I have porcelein skin and while it's not "trendy" at least my skin is healthy.

And about hair dye, there is no significant research saying it is bad. I think if you only do it once or twice and don't get it deep into your scalp, you're fine. Try a dye kit at home instead of the parlor because they tend to be "more toxic" or "strong" at the beauty parlor.

I didn't read all of the responses, but along with the heat of a tanning bed, there is the radiation factor.  It is like getting an x-ray while pregnant and you are not suppose to get x-rays while being pregnant.  Anytime you go to get an x-ray done, the technician will ask you if there is any way you could be pregnant.  So, no to the tanning bed.  I believe, here in the states anyway, there is a warning about being pregnant.  If they know you are pregnant, they won't even allow you to use them.

Are you still going to go to the tanning bed at 25 plus weeks when your baby's eyes begin to open???????????

I asked around and several drs have said that its no harm to your child they just don't want you to get overheated.....I'm probably gonna lay like twice a week and if I start getting hot I'm just gonna get out. But you have to have a note from you Dr.

I laid in the sun throughout my last trimester and I just had to make sure I didnt get overheated...so I would dip in the pool or ocean.  DD is perfectly fine.  I've been told that it's not the tanning bed that's bad it's overheating.  I would definitely ask your doctor before doing it!

No tanning in tanning beds!  Why would you even want to risk it?  There are sacrifices that you need to make during pregnancy, it's ONLY 9 months of your life to devote to keeping your little one protected.  Please, for the sake of your baby don't take the chance.... small price to pay for the BIG reward you will be getting in just 27 short weeks.

The same reason why you shouldnt take extra hot baths or showers. Your baby's water temp in the amniotic sac is arounf 99 degrees as it is. Your baby may be protected by the uterus, but to much heat can do significant damage. Whatever you feel physically your baby feels aswell, and sunbeds can make you very hot internally and externally, and the same goes for your baby as well.

If you really want to do these things that bad, I suggest talking to your doctor to make sure.

Hope this helps
