Too much Iron, help!

Hi

I am 12 weeks pregnant, just had my blood results back & my iron levels are too high.  Range 6.6-26.6 & I am 40.1

I have immediately stopped my prenatals as they had 121% iron RDA, but I am really concerned.  How high is this??  Is it a little high or way high??

I cannot get to see my Obs lady for a week, but I am freaking out about what this means for me & for the pregnancy!

Anyone have any experience with this?

Dairy products are said to decrease iron absorption by as much as 50% so if you are eating say whole wheat bread, etc or anything high in iron, you can try to pair it with dairy..

On that note though, I honestly know nothing about this and it would be a good idea to come up with a more strict diet plan for a period with your doctor

Hi

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated!  I have separate Folic Acid so thats no problem, and I have been a vegetarian for 21 years so no meat.  Really actually thought I was eating a pretty balanced diet so was so surprised with the result.

Have been feeling really bad, but just put it down to pregnancy & possible anaemia, but def not too much iron!

Will try & pin Doc down asap.

Appreciate you taking the time to write, thanks x

I haven't.  You still need your folic acid, though.  So if I were you I would get a bottle with just that.

Think about your diet.  Red meats have a lot of iron.  Don't use cast iron cookware.  Avoid vitamin c supplements.  Avoid foods with iron supplementation, read the labels. Some foods inhibit iron absorption. The tannic acid in tea and coffee, fiber in cereals and nuts, and calcium in antacids all appear to inhibit the absorption of iron.

Most of the time a detox in necessary, usually by donating.  I'm not sure if you can donate blood while you're pregnant though.

Don't take my advice...you really need to talk to your doctor.  If I were you I'd call the nurse and demand to talk to someone as soon as possible.
