Two Heartbeats, One Baby??

I had an ultrasound at my doctor at 8 weeks (this is not the normal practice of my OB).  We were looking at the ultrasound, and saw what looked like two heartbeats.  One was up hear the baby's head, the other near their feet.  I asked what she was seeing with both heartbeats, and she said she was "thinking".  In the end she concluded it was the baby's umbilical cord beating, but didn't seem definitive or confident in her answer.  We only saw one baby.

What possible explanations are there for this?

ya know, i didnt think of that! and that's actually what my ob said may have happened with my midwife! that i was only 3 weeks, and she didn't find a heartbeat, but instead doubled mine!(of course, i heard the heartbeat, but he's saying she doubled mine, and she's just wrong lol)

good luck and congrats on your pregnancy, jdetzi!!!

could be twins, and maybe the first is overlapping the 2nd....my aunt had twins and my cousin amanda covered her brother 100% till my aunt was like 30 weeks pregnant!....he was smaller, and somehow her heartbeat overlapped his, and hid him! talk about concieted lol....funny, cos now we're in our 20's and they are the same way today!

I am not sure but I want to bump this up a little bit. I would think if there were two heartbeats then you are having twins but I am def. not a doctor.
