WHY does it hurt so bad to cough/sneeze while pregnant?

Well, I know it is normal to get a pain when you cough/sneeze because I asked earlier and a lot of people said they had it too...Well, it happened again today when I coughed, soo bad I thought I was about to double over!

My question is WHY does this happen...is it 'round ligament' pain?

I have an appointment on Thursday, I can ask then if I remember but I was hoping one of you fine ladies had an answer =)

Might be old, but it helped me! I have a pain that feels like I'm pulling a nerve everytime I cough. It's gotten to the point where I am afraid to cough and do everything I can NOT to because I had no idea what was going on! I'm only 10 weeks along, so I don't know what to expect. Everyone is different.

It is round ligament pain.

I just had my 11 week doctors appointment this past Thursday (April 26th). I have the same issue, almost feels like a charlie horse in my left or right pelvic area when I sneeze. I double over in pain, but luckily it only lasts a few seconds.

My doctor said any pain like that, that lasts longer than a minute or even lasts close to a minute would be something to raise concern about. But generally nothing serious...

He said since our muscles and everything inside are stretching it causes pains like that to happen. I have been eating a lot of water based fruits and that has really helped to lessen the effect of the pain. Strawberries, oranges, kiwi, and apples are ones I eat a lot of.

Hope this helps you :O)

Congrats on baby!

WOw glad I'm not alone. I'm 14 weeks pregnant and my allergies are really acting up and I was so afraid I was breaking my baby with these violent sneezes -they hurt so bad! I was scared that since it hurts me it probably hurts my baby too, but as long as it's just me and my muscles suffering it's fine :)

I'm so glad to finally read some answers! I have had a cough for about 7 or 8 weeks now, it's every day, plus i'm not even sick! The doctor said my pregnant body is trying to keep things in the air out of my lungs. I'm 15 weeks pregnant but i thought for sure that this pain from the coughing(definitely because it was getting worse by the week) was going to cause me to have a misscarriage. The doctors wouldnt explain what it was, they would just say as long as i dont have any bleeding i'm fine(which i haven't had even 1 spot of bleeding). Thanks so much everyone for finally letting me know what this is and how to help with the pain a bit! :)

I had the same problem as early as 4.5 weeks.. in fact that is the first symptom I felt before I even tested.
I get SUCH a bad, stinging, killing pain every time I sneeze, that I double over and cannot come back or speak for a minute.

I spoke to the doctor and he said it is normal. I also have fibroids, so I assume it is a lot of pelvic congestion along with stretching ligaments.
The doctor told me that before I cough or sneeze, I should hug a pillow to my belly and bend forward.
I find if I bend forward and BRACE myself for a sneeze, it does not hurt so bad!

Guess it is all a part of having a life grow inside of us :)
No pain, no gain, lol..
Good luck everyone!

I get it too, especially when getting up or shifting positions but mines always in the same right spot where when i push into my abdomin it feels realyl sore and tender. Didnt sound like ligament to me but i guess it was afterall! Check with your doc but i get it all the time. I sneeze alot and everytime im in pain. Alot of the times it feels like a charley horse but goes away in a few min or less.

Imagine your ligaments supporting your uterus as rubber bands. They're stretched to the max. When you sneeze/cough you pull even harder on those already stretched ligaments. So it definitely does hurt!

Hmm I wonder as well. I used to get that stupid pulling pain as early as like 8 weeks. Which sees to early for the muscles to be really stretching that much. Ugh... I don't iss that feeling.

I would believe because your muscles in your stomach are a bit stretched, it's because of that!  But ask your doctor, cause that makes me wonder too!  Ahaha,

I wouldnt worry about it just because our bodys do weird stuff when were pregnant ne ways...i think we should learn to not let anything come as a suprise to us!! lol
