first pregnancy

Hi my sister is pregnant with her first baby, we went to the dr last week and they are estimating she is almost 9 weeks now but we are not so sure on that estimation, when we had the u/s last week there was a gestational sac measuring 1.94 cm but no baby but the nurse practioner did not move the wand and was quick to recommend ways to terminate the pregnancy, she diagnosed my sister with a blighted ovum, that was a hard day, we went back today and we had another ultrasound and it looks like the sac it measured 2.71cm we thought we saw something and as soon as we pointed it out to her she quickly moved to another angle. we think it is too early to be able to see the baby and in the last week we've done alot of research from our estimation she got pregnant around the middle week of august/2008 the dr sent her for a hcg level last week but not this week..we are now in the waiting stage and we are waiting a couple of weeks to see what might happen. Has this happened to anyone else? and what was your outcome. any help would be much appreciated. thank you

sac size:

    * 6th week = 17mm
    * 8th week = 31 mm

** by the sac size, it would seem that your sister is maybe at the 7 week mark...although something should be seen at 7 weeks....

If she got pregnant in the middle of August, I would think they would see something by now...unfortunately, with a blighted ovum, the sac will continue to grow even though there is no baby...IF she was 9 weeks, she would definately see something and hear a heartbeat if this was a normal pregnancy.  IF they truly feel it is a blighted ovum, she cannot wait a couple weeks...the larger the sac, the more difficulties it presents such as infection.  Your sister needs to call her doctor and demand another ultrasound WITH him/her to determine what is going on.  Or switch doctors...Good luck!
