cramping & ectopic preg

I went to the ER for abdominal cramping (lasted 3 days) and was told I was 5-6 weeks pregnant and the cramping is more than likely an ectopic pregnancy.  An ultrasound was done and nothing could be seen in my uterus.  A cyst was found on one ovary. They told me my hormone levels are only 1000 so in 48 hours they should reach 2000 and another ultrasound needs to be done because something should then be seen in the uterus. I was also told I have a UTI and was given antibiotics.  I started the antibiotics and the cramping has completely gone away.

My ? is should I really be fully concerned that this is an ectopic pregnancy when there is no bleeding, never had an STD and, when they felt my stomach and when 2 pelvic exams were completed there was no  extreme pain?

I understand your having a normal pregnancy, but I had to come here for a rant lol. I hate how doctors automatically assume every pregnancy is ectopic. Honestly, most pregnancies have some sort of cramping, some light spotting, and in a lot of cases, there is a cyst on the ovary that carries the hormones to support the baby.

I have went in to the ER with this baby, and they did an US and found a cyst as well, but nothing in my uterus....but that was obvious as I was only 4 weeks along. I have always wondered statistically how many women go through D&C or take Methotrexate because their told the pregnancy is ectopic, when it's really not. I almost lost my youngest DS because of this issue. They urged an immediate D&C because it was either ectopic or not viable, 9 months later I gave birth to a healthy baby boy...who I wouldn't have in my life, if I would have listened to the doctors.

I agree with the other ladies.

The fact you have never had an STD and have had no bleeding do not mean you do not have an ectopic.  LosingMyMindInGA is correct in that you may not feel pain from an ectopic until further along.

With an HCG level at only 1000 you may still not be far along enough to see much.

At this point it could go either way.  I think you should wait and see waht the repeat scan says.  They said you were 5-6 weeks but if your dates are off that could put you at 4-5  weeks meaning you wouldn't see anything in the sac at this point.  Most women with Ectopic pregnancies don't experience pain until further along (around 9 weeks).  The fact that you have a UTI sounds like that was the cause of your cramping, in my opinion, however, I'm not a doctor.  Just wait and see what the repeat scan shows.  They should be able to detect from ultrasound if it IS an ectopic.

My SIL had a ectopic and she was admitted to the hospital with extreme pains...I remember she said something about it being close to bursting her tube.  I agree with everyone else...follow up.  It never hurts to be on the safe side.

Definitely followup with care just to be on the safe side. If it's not an ectopic, great, but if it is you don't want to delay care. My friend had an ectopic pregnancy that caused her to bleed so much into her abdomen that when she had surgery the docs said they had never seen so much blood from an ectopic. Definitely worth following up on.
