What does it mean to get your membranes stripped? And why do they do it?

It is not a required procedure. I didn't have one with my daughter.

They pull the water bag away it helps get things ready got labor, I got mine done Friday and lost a big ball of mucus plug Sunday

I'm not sure what it means, but they do it if you are dilated a little bit to try and speed up the process of labor.
