drug testing question

How exactly does the hospital do drug test on newborns? Do they take their blood, catch their first pee? And why do they have to test newborns if the mother has no drugs in her system?

If you live in a high risk area , and /or are using any clinic or government assistance they can test for drugs.

Ohhh. I was just wandering why they wouldn't even mention it. They have talked to me about all the other tests and stuff they do. Its like they want it to be a secret that they'll be drug testing your baby.

I live in NJ and its not an invasive test so that's probably why they don't require consent.

Where do you live? I live in Mississippi and i was told that all babies are tested. Which kind of irritates me because i have not been given any kind of consent form for that. And apparently, it doesn't matter how i feel about them doing a test on my son.

I read a few years ago some lady got life in prison for murder because she was doing cocaine while pregnant and had a stillbirth

They test the meconium, baby's first poop... And they test the baby because in some states mom can be penalized if she took anything during her pregnancy and the meconium will show up with anything taken after about 18-20 weeks, by then it'd be out of moms system.

Where I live they do not test newborns unless they suspect drug use of the mother during pregnancy.

I don't think they drug test the baby unless the mother has drugs in her system.
