babies tummy is what they call an open gut till around the age of 6-9 months. The linning is open in the tummy and intestines to aid in the digestion of the potiens in breastmilk and so they get all the nurients form it. Al babie are differenent on when they should start solids. But no baby should have any solid before age 6 months and older if they were born before 40 weeks gestation. Constipation, spitting up, runny nose, gas any many other things show you that baby is not ready for solids if these things occur. Breastfed babies do not need anyhting else for the first year of life. Breastmilk or formula should be babies main nutrician tilla ge one. GIving them set meals before that takes nutician away from brain development as they will eat less milk.

They used to say rice cereal only as it is the least allergenic food but it lacks in nutricianal value compared to other foods and is the most filling.

Feeding before a year to add in learning. Breastfed babies tend to have more adapable palet as mom eats a variety of foods. Breastmilk is very sweet and breastfed babies tend to eat sweeter foods easier. Remember it is about the learning and getting them to move it around theri mouths and swallow. The first foods with sweeter tastes that baby will enjoy better are sweet potatoes and avacado for first foods recomended that have very high nutritional value. then pears and apples. Bananas should not be introduced till after baby has adapted to foods and digesting them good. Nutritional values and more about solids go to wholesome babyfoods web site. It is awesome!

I will say though that the longer you hold foods off the better immune system bbay will have as they get the most from the breastmilk when exclusivly breastfed. THere are lots of moms who let baby eat as they can which means as they are able to feed themselves and pick up table foods. THis is new to the US but has been done for a long time with good results.

Hope this info helps you decided what you should do for your little one. Dr. Sears web site also has great info, Kelly mom. and breastfeding *******. happy reading!

I agree with the other gals.  I started my son at four months on rice cereal mixed with formula or breast milk.  Then at 5-6 months we started introducing veggies then fruits then meats closer to 7-8 months.  Feed each thing one at a time for at least 4 days, to make sure there's no allergies.  And, yes, be sure you have a camera! :-)  Also, be ready to go straight to the bath...LOL

Hi, when starting a baby with solid foods it's always best to start with veggies, since fruits have a more better sweet taste. Bc if u start with fruits he may not like the veggies bc they have more of a bland taste which is good to start off with!! Now u wanna stick with the same veggie for a few days or a week never mix them in the beginning just in case he does have an allergy against a food u can figure it out and obviously not feed him that item.. Id start with green beans 1st then carrots and so on after all the veggies are done then I would start the fruits! And remember only feed him one at a time until u know he has no allergies!!!

Start with cereal (usually rice mixed with water or breastmilk)) then introduce one food a week starting with veggies then fruit then meat. No combination foods until he has had each food seperate (so if he has a reaction you'll know which food did it). Because fruits are sweeter if you start with those then you may have issues getting him to eat veggies. I started my daughter on solids about 5 months and continued nursing her until 13 months. Have a camera and washcloth ready!

It's up to you. Moat research shows delaying introduction of solid foods past six months can lead to an increase in food allergies. This being said, solid foods should not be the majority of your childs diet until one year of age. Breastmilk is all a child needs in the first year of life and is most important
