girdle after birth

Well I'm gonna give birth in about 3 weeks or so and well I'm Hispanic and my family has this tradition thing that when ever a woman gives birth they put on a girdle afterwards to help reduce allbthe weight gained is that true???  Cause my husband and I went to the mall and he kept bugging about getting me this girdle to use after birth.  Well my question here is does it really help to do that after birth to help reduce fat?
