I think it is ok to use but not to listen for 10 minutes... I just use it for a minute to check of him and then let him rest... I used it with my last she is now 5 and fine...
I know that when you use a doppler like marie1210 it sends sound waves that basically jump off the fetus and are sent back to you. The reason that it isn't considered good to use is because babies don't like the noise because it is high pitch to them (or so I've researched). Whenever I used my doppler when my baby was little she would try to swim away and I would have to chase her with it and now at 37 weeks if she is sleeping and I use it because I'm worried about movement or something it immediatly wakes her up so I think what they said about noise and hurting their ears is true. I used it almost everyday in early pregnancy and now I use it maybe one a week or two.
When I was thinking of renting a doppler, the website I was looking recommended not using it more than 3 times per week. It uses sound waves to transmit the babies heartbeat, much like that used during ultrasounds. There is still a debate on whether u/s are harmful but the thought behind it is that it could possibly cause hearing problems in the baby. Again, this is speculation and nothing is proven but that might be where the nurse is coming from.
My midwife says that you really shouldn't do ultrasounds or doppler unless it's medically necessary. That means paying for a 3D u/s or listening to the heartbeat with a doppler. Her reasoning is: "what happens if we find out it is actually harmful years down the road?" It's better not to do it, unless it's for check-ups and to see how the baby is doing. But then again, my midwife could just be strict. :)
i agree. thanks for responding.
I just bought a fetal doppler brand new on ebay for 103....plus shipping(113.98). I dont' think that it does any harm to the baby if it did then why would the doctors use them? None of the research I did said that it caused harm. If you are worried maybe you could use it once every few days. I think that I will probably use mine everyday to unless the doctor says different. I have my appoinment on thursday so I will ask and let you know then. I really think it will be fine and I think the stress of worring if everything will be ok would cause more damage then checking for a heartbeat.

i don't know about doppler weather radar. i honestly don't think the fetal doppler is harmful, the tech just made me feel a lil unsure. and i just wanted to know everyones opinion on it.
i'm really sorry that happened to you. i lost one at 9 weeks back in june. are you currently trying again or are you waiting a lil? i tried right away after my first period.and did they say why this happened to ya? i didn't get any answers why it happened to me. thats why i love this doppler so much. its so reasuring for me at this time. i'm one thats going to be 30 weeks and still a nervous wreck and wondering is it gonna happen again. thank you so much for responding. and good luck to you.
if doppler is bad for the baby, or people in general, does that mean Doppler weather radar is bad? sorry random weird thought.
i would love one i think it would be reasuring and make you relaxed so that good for the baby i would love one if i get pregant again as i lost a baby at 13 weeks in nov so i will never relax again
i forgot to mention i'm 13 1/2 weeks. not sure if that makes a difference. and also i didn't ask my ob about it yet, i guess i should have at my first visit. i plan to bring it up this thursday at my next visit. thanks girls!
