I work with children under 3 who have downs. I personally wanted the tests, not because I would terminate but to be prepared. Children with downs will usually need speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and it would be great to find an early start preschool program for children with special needs like the one I work at, to focus on socialization skills. Children with downs are so sweet and friendly, but that can be problamatic as they lack boundaries and can be taken advantage of. Check out the local resources for children with downs such as Regional Center. The earlier they get services the better off they will be.
Thanks everyone. My feeling is that he will be perfect. Our third child (first son) passed away at term due to an accident. So we are considered a high risk pregnancy from that and this will be my fourth c-section, and I have a tumor in my brain (non-cancerous). It's a lot at once but we have definitely learned you get the hand you are dealt in life and adapt accordingly.
If I may throw in my 2 cents..
With my brother in law they were absolutely certain he was gonna have downs cuz of his feet I think is what they said. And 20 years later he's perfectly fine. And I agree with bee world needs more people like you
I didn't even want the test either way I'm going to love my baby
This world needs more moms like
you :)
I just got a "soft marker" myself; a little spot on her little tummy called echogenic bowels. Meeting with the high-risk OB this Friday, they're going to do a more detailed scan on her and I guess tell me all the possibilities. Good luck with your little one, and if you can keep me informed...I'd be interested in what happens to the other moms and babies dealing with this.
