You usually can't hear the heat beat with on until 10 weeks or after. Since it is sending sound waves back and forth it isn't supposed to be used too often... but I was told you can use it once a day if you only do it for like  a minute at a time. I did it WAY more often than that and my baby was fine. Also they do not like it when you listen. My daughter when she was little would zip away when I would find her and kick me as she got older. Don't know why but I would ALWAYS get some kind of reaction.

I was wondering the same thing. I ordered one from heartones.com. I didn't need a doctor's permission slip. So far I have used it twice in two weeks. I wish I could use it everyday but I don't, just in case it could harm the baby. The disclaimer says that there is no evidence that a using the doppler causes harm to the baby, but there is also no evidence that it doesn't. It just advises to use precaution so I figure I shouldn't use it too much.

I kind of had the same question. I went to order a doppler from storkradio, but they wanted me to get a permission slip from my doc? If it is safe why do we need a permission slip? And if anyone knows where I can order one without needing a permission slip ;)

My doctor told me that when I get to that point we can buy one. He said that it doesnt hurt the baby, but that they dont like it, so that it can be hard to find the h/b because they will role away and try to avoid it. I dont know how much truth is in that, but that is what he said.  I would say as long as you verify it is safe, use it enough to keep your mind at ease!
