There are blood tests used to check for markers for generic abnormalities (like t21) that will also tell gender and can be done much earlier, friend of mine found out at 12 weeks. But it's still a new test, don't know if it's available everywhere, and you may have to be high risk already to qualify for it. So that might not be an option for you.
Ultrasound gender determination can usually tell about 16-20 weeks.
