Can I ask why you are getting her to drink water? Constipation? Heat? If its constipation try changing her milk if its the heat even a few drops will help xxxx babys of this age rarely drink lots of water and to be honest don't need much water xxxx hope it helps xxxx
She shouldn't need water yet hun, just make sure she's having regular milk feeds.
Your baby doesn't need water yet hun. If you are breast feeding she will get her water through your milk. If you give her formula, the water in the formula is sufficient. Babies don't need water until about a year old. Can I ask why ur trying to feed her water anyway?
Don't give ur baby water!? Ur breast milk or formula is sufficient supply of what baby needs at this age. Water isn't introduced until close to a year & even then milk is best.
I agree. No water unless pedi has recommended it. If he/she did, I'm curious to know why.
My ped said no water that early!!
Mine said no more than 20ml a day. But only for a reason, they dont need it for the sake of it. My mum is against giving water. The reason my doc gave was cause were having trouble with wind. Having no more than 20ml after a feed can open up a hole to help gas come up. Apparently milk once in the stomach turns to a yoghurt. I tried it once and didnt help so im not doing it. My girl is only ten days.
Don't give her water. That's a no no
Why no water? I have never heard that, I have 2 children and for all the things I got told off about giving water was not one of them, in fact I was advised to give it to help with constipation.
Oh well, guess I'll be slated for giving this advice, but it was what came from my health visitor and midwives and you need some help.
I found it difficult to get my kids to accept plain water, I found that I had to flavour it with a few drops (and I mean 2/3 drops into around 4oz of water, I would only let them drink an oz) of fresh orange juice which helped very quickly with constipation. Obviously dont do that if baby is not bunged up or you will have a few very nasty nappies or potentially a sick baby to deal with. If baby is not constipated or dehydrated then you probably dont need to offer any water, they do get what they need from their milk.
@sorenr clearly their are differnet needs for different needs. Constipation should be the only reason why you would give ur baby water but your dr should still advise that. No one is telling anyone off about anything. We are simply asking questions and a few people have asked the author of this post is the baby constipated.
But in general day to day feedings water is not good for the baby!
P.S No one is slating anyone either.
Baby is too young for water!! If baby is colic-y give gripe water or gas drops..but at 12 days old she should only be getting formula or breast milk nothing else. Even if its heat keep baby in a cool room /indoors. But definitely stop giving water!
I agree, wayyy too early for water!
Also, at 12 days old you don't want to flavor anything, you NEVER know what your baby is allergic to, and at this stage she is much too little to risk anything like an allergic reaction, when you do start experimenting with flavors, etc, about 6 months, you need to try one flavor at a time to make sure baby doesn't react badly to it, that goes for baby food as well.
If you're using some formula as well, it could be the formula causing constipation, if this is the problem.
You generally don't give water because A-there's NO nutritional value and it fills their belly making it so they have no appetite. A baby's stomach is very small, everything you put into their mouth needs to count. For the first year of life there's little a baby needs beyond BM or Formula. Even solids and baby food have little nutritional value and are given for more or less practice and texture.
Um she stuggles to break wind/burp after feeds a lot an I ws tld at the hosp tht a lil water a day nt a lot wil hlp her, I wsnt tld nt to giv baby water, bt nt as if its a feed jus a lil to help her break winds cos she ends up cryin after feeds an I knw its a wind by the way she pulls her face I assist her in rubbin her bck gently an pacin up an dwn in the room it does come out bt after she's fussed a lot so I contactd her pedi, an she said a lil water wil help wth ths prblm bt she wnt to drnk water she pulls her face as if its smthn strange I jus wnt wts best for her, i feel so helpless smtyms..
I dnt hv breastmlk sadly, I've heard several ladies here comment on mayb changin her formula won't tht b bad for her at ths age? Please note tht I'm raisin her by myslf and she's my first child, I dnt always hv the knowledge an expertise so mayb to some of u my questions seem stupid...
Of course they're not stupid!
Its hard to cope with a windy baby, I've been there, I'm not too sure that water would help though...try taking her off the bottle to wind more often during feeds, I used to use a product called Infacol which helped a little but I believe a doctor could prescribe something if it is particularly bad. Theres no real magic solution, not that I found anyway! It does get better in time though.
She's cn the pedi nxt wk I thnk u ryt, cos she's got a very healthy appetite, she ***** so hard on her bottles during feeds, she doesn't giv herslf a momnt, at the moment she's drnkn about 100mls per feed, every three hrs or so, I did ask the doc an nurses bout her appetite an they al agree she jus hs a healthy appetite, bt I thnk I need to pace her mayb she won't hv these terrible winds she cries wen she shud break wind an I feel so helpless :((( like I said I cnt stnd her cryn any noise she mkes I'm there I'm so paraniod I dnt sleep, love her so much, I'm gona tke ur advice thnk u it mkes sense
Burping during feedings will help if you don't already. You can also add infant gas drops to her bottle or give directly to her. I had to do that with my daughter. I wasn't able to breast feed either.
The first month is a lot of trial and error. You are getting to know her and she's getting used to this big scary world. It's all very normal. You are doing the best you can and that's way more than a lot of people.
Wt is the nme of it? Cn she use it? I dnt wnt upset her tummy, I feel so bad tht I dnt hv breastmilk mayb she wudnt hv ths prblm :((
Hun everyone has or will be a new mum. Don't feel.stupid. yes water isn't good for babies until they are much older. She will have the necessary hydration from her formula or breast milk. For her wind..burp her.. massage her belly softly after a bath and try infacol..we had wind issues for months. The midwife prescribed Infacol and it was very helpful. It basically bursts the little bubbles of wind and brings them out. :) itt won't harm her..its orange flavour too so she'll like it xxxx
Ask your doctor for a different formula, it's not bad for her at this stage, if anything it will help her, there's formula especially for fussiness and gas, so ask your doctor, go by her recommendation!
Also, I don't know what flow of nipple you're using, but I always had to use a slow flow nipple with my son, or he'd just overwhelm himself with it!
