oral sex

Ok ladies, sorry if this is TMI. My husband and I were having oral sex and while he was down there he stopped. He said I "tasted" different. Has this happened with anyone else? What causes it?

Sure but sometimes understanding the mechanism is more helpful than the "just don't do it" declaration  :)  Now, it would be interesting to learn what it is about these hormonal changes that make a woman taste "different" while pregnant. If it's sweeter, my guess is because we have more glucose in our bloodstream? I've heard of diabetics whose skin tastes sweet!

I'm going to have to remind the husband that the vagina is not a trumpet or trombone and to not blow into it. lol

Thanks for the back-up info but we pretty much already established that you don't want to force large amounts of air into the vagina when pregnant...it doesn't even SOUND like a good idea, all medical information aside.

Glad you found the information you were looking for though!

My husband and I were so intrigued we had a deep conversation about this over dinner, discussing physiology and membrane transport. I found a few medical articles on it, including one from 1943 on the "fatal insufflation of a pregnant woman;" basically this poor woman was having some sort of vaginal infection and the time the treatment was to deliver medication via air. They pumped in 600 cc's of air into her vagina and she went into fits after they removed the insufflator. In her autopsy they found embolisms everywhere, but not on the fetal side of the placenta. So yes, if you sit on an air compressor this can happen. Also if you have any tears in your vagina it may be a route for air to enter during normal sex/oral.

There you go.

Uhh...I don't know about this. The only capillary bed in your body that is capably of absorbing oxygen is in your lungs (aveoli). The partial pressure of the oxygen has to be just right for it to even diffuse. You also have a huge capillary bed in your mouth and you take big gulps of air all the time without creating an embolism. I can see where blowing air up one's flute (lol laura_elizabeth) could do some harm though, it could probably rupture the thin tissue, maybe that's where this embolism might come into play but I'd expect hemorrhaging first (which would definitely not allow for air to go in). But I think you have to sit on an air compressor...that said I guess there are always rare cases! And then there's the potential for bacteria to be introduced. I'm sure the act of the usual love-making introduces some bubbles, and boy that can have the potential to increase the pressure. But I think more pregnant women die in labor than they do from oral...oh joy!

It normally doesn't which is why it's typically not a concern. It's just something to bear in mind and to know.

I don't mean to get defensive, it's just a sore spot for me. There are so many babies who no longer have mothers because they weren't aware of this and it shouldn't happen.

No, it's not. This is done when oral sex occurs, hence why I said it. This obviously is not something that has occurred or happened to you, but that's not to say it doesn't to everyone else. You can giggle about it, but fact is it has and women have died from it, especially when they shouldn't have.

laura_elizabeth search for "air embolism oral sex pregnancy"...you'll find the info, but mayo clinic is a good site for it.

Either way..it's good knowledge to keep in the back of your head, but definitely not something to worry about as long as your oral sex doesn't involve your man attempting to use you to practice playing the trumpet...LOL.

If you're interested--it talks about this. I don't know about others, but my midwife DID talk to me about this. It is by no means common, but this doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Actually laura_elizabeth that's not quite true :-).

Because a woman's blood flow is increased to the pelvic region, her vagina is swollen and engorged with blood. Some of the capillaries going into the vagina are open, and if air is forced into them - it can cause an air embolism which at best can cause a stroke, and at worst can be fatal for mom or baby.

WITH THAT SAID...it's incredibly rare. like...4 document cases, and it's not something I worry about (not TMI but hubby and I rather enjoy our oral and have through all 3 pregnancies, lol).

The only caveat would be if someone's partner is in the habit of forcefully blowing air into the vagina - that's dangerous when not pregnant, but SUPER dangerous when pregnant because of the increased blood flow...so don't do it.

But you know...since most people don't do this during oral sex...I wouldn't worry, lol.

Be very careful having oral sex while pregnant--it's fine if you do it for him, but if he manages to get any air in you it can kill both you and the baby.
