positive AFP blood test

How many other moms had a positive afp blood test? I am positive for down syndrome but they said that they get a lot of false positives... I go into genetic testing on Monday.. i'm just curious as to if that is true and how many moms ended up having a positive test with nothing wrong with their baby..

I did the quad screening and everything came back negative but I was on the higher side fir down syndrome. Scared the sht out of me. Dr asked if I wanted to do the amnio but I refused due to the risks. So they told me when I go in for my gender scan they would look for any abnormalities or soft markers.. thank God everything looked good. My odds were 1:280. It is a horrible feeling to go thru I would never accept that test again simply because its just unnecessary stress!!! Like. @juiceboxhero said 90% or the time its a false positive!! I am now almost 34 weeks and having a healthy baby girl! Good luck to you girls try not to worry too much xo

Thanks ladies you really made me feel a little better about this situation. I would absolutely love my daughter to pieces but i just think it would be hard to do on my own and I don't really speak to the babys dad who is my ex so I can't guarantee he will be there to help me... thanks again :)

Yea...even though it ended up doubling our chances we still have a 74/75 chance of having a baby without DS. We only told our mothers and are doing our best to stay positive! She'll be loved to bits no matter what!! :)

When I had the testing done, the doctor told me "the tests usually come back positive 90% of the time, but only 10% of the time are the tests correct".  A lot of women test positive and baby is fine.

I had the quad screen done and they said the blood came back positive and that I will be seeing a genetic counselor on Monday to measure the babyand they will give me my risk factor... sounds like the same thing that you went through... well hopefully both of our babies are okay and nothing is going to go wrong.. good luck to you too!! Very nerve racking and scary at the same time!

I had the sequential screen done, chances came back 1/155 for DS. Went and saw the genetic counselor yesterday and had an ultrasound. Heart looks good but they found some calcium markers that cut our chances for DS down to 1/75. We go back on the 14th for another us to check the markers and leg and arm growth. Not sure if that was the same screening you had done but they suggested we do an amnio to know for sure but we don't feel it's worth the risk. If the markers are still there on the 14th then we will do the blood test that pulls the babies dna out of my blood, and they say that test is 99% accurate where as the screen was only 90%. So we're kind of waiting on the next two weeks to see how things go. Sorry for the long response but it's a bit nerve wracking waiting. Good luck to you momma!
