I am so confused

I went to the hospital on 7/8 and was told that I had a miscarriage.  I have went to my doctor 3 times to have lab work done and hcg levels keep going up.  When I was at the hospital it was 37; my lab from 7/10 was 29; my lab from 7/14 was 48; my lab from 7/17 was 56.  My doctor told me that he does not want to do a D & C but he will if my levels keep rising.  I got a call today from the nurse and a doctor that I have never seen reviewed my chart bc my regular doctor is off and he wants me to come in for more lab work monday.  He told the nurse that there would have to be a significant increase in order for me to have an ultrasound.  I have had 2 ultrasounds alreay, one at the hospital and one this past friday, and they are not able to find a baby and there is nothing in my tubes.  I am a little upset bc they will not tell me why this is happening and I wish they would just do a D & C so I can move on.  Can anyone give me some kinda idea why my doctor will not do a D & C and why another doctor that I have never seen or heard of in my life would have an influenece over my medical decisions.

Thanks for all the comments.  My regular obgyn called me yesterday and I had to go get a shot of methotrexate bc he was worried that there may have been something in my tubes that was not showing up on an ultrasound.  Hopefully this will take care of everything and we will be able to try again in the future.  My husband has been great through all of this and says that he wants to try again as soon as possible.  The only side effect that we have noticed so far from the methotrexate is the dizziness and vomiting but hopefully that will stop soon.

As hard as all this may be, there probably isn't much they can do.  When I was m/c'ing, I didn't even know I was pregnant and found out by going to the ER for really bad cramping and bleeding.  My hcg levels were in the 300's and they didn't see anyting while doing the u/s (besides a cyst on my ovary).  They told me to f/u with my doctor and have him check my levels.  So I went first thing the next mornig, of course he wasn't there.  They told me all they can do is check my levels and see if they are increasing or not.  Well they were decreasing and 2 days after I went to the hospital I passed the fetal tissue.  So if you already passed the tissue, they can;t do anything else.  Your numbers have to be in the 1,000's until they can see anything on an u/s.  As far as the bleeding goes, I bled for about a week after, then didn't get my period for another 8 weeks.  My doctor said if by 8 weeks I didn't get a period to call him, but having to wait that long is normal.  If you alraedy passed the fetal tissue than no d/c is needed.

Then, when I got pregnant again, they told me that they don't see patients until they are 9-10 weeks, since the risk of m/c is highest then.  Of course they checked my levels to make sure they were incresing ok, but after that I had to wait.  It was the longest wait of my life, but I now understand why they wait.  The thing is, that there is nothing that can be done to stop a m/c from happening (after it has started).

Right now you are probably upset and frustrated because of the m/c and that is totally normal and understandable.  But every women's body is different and it will take time to heal (both physically and emotionally).  If you truly feel that something isn't right, then make an appointment with another doctor or go to the ER.  But my doctor told me since I passed it naturally that no f/u is needed with him.  Best of luck to you and I am sorry you have to go through this.

It can take up to 2 weeks to miscarry naturally, which is why your levels are most likely rising so slowly. Also, your levels are way too low to see anything via sonogram. When HCG reaches 1000 you can see the sac.

Thanks for the comment.  I have already passed the baby naturally; they say that probably happened over 4th of July weekend and I thought it was a cyst.  Yeah I know no one can answer for the doctor but it just irks me.  I talked to the nurse again yesterday afternoon and she told me again that if it was not a significant increase that there was nothing that they could do for me AT ALL.  Hello!  I have been going back and forth to their office and they told me that they would do everything possible to help me and now they tell me that there may not be anything they can do.  I have been bleeding since 4th of July weekend and they cant tell me how long that is going to last.  I have been in pain this whole time and they tell me to take tylenol or midol ( which do not work or even dull the pain).  My friend told me I needed to go to another doctor that might have a little more concern for what is going on but I do not want to have to start all over again.

Well, I can't really answer for your doctor BUT they probably want to wait and see if your body will pass it naturally.  I had a mc at 10w and even then my doctor didn't want to do a D&C because it is a significant surgery like operation...any time you can avoid being under anaesthesia the better not to mention possible complications from the D&C itself.

Sorry you are going through this...perhaps you can ask them about having misoprostal/cytotec inserted vaginally to induce your body to pass the tissue etc.  This is what my doctor did...
