pretty scared

Over Thanksgiving break,I stayed with my elderly aunt, and she has just found out that she's had shingles for quite some time. I'm really worried now about me possibly contracting it even though I show no signs of it. I'm so confused about what I need to do. is there a test my doctor can do or are there visible signs of shingles?

Yes if you're had chicken pox it won't effect you. BUT you can develope shingles at any point during your life if you've had chicken pox. Shingles is typically brought on by stress and becomes more likely the older you get.

That's what it says online, but of course you can't trust everything you read online, haha. I would call and ask but I'm pretty sure that's how it works. My mom got shingles and I never had to worry about catching them because I had chicken pox when I was younger.

So if I've already had the chicken pox I can't get it?

Shingles is contagious and can be spread from an affected person to babies, children, or adults who have not had chickenpox. But instead of developing shingles, these people develop chickenpox. Once they have had chickenpox, people cannot catch shingles (or contract the virus) from someone else. Once infected, however, people have the potential to develop shingles later in life.

Shingles is contagious to people who have not previously had chickenpox, as long as there are new blisters forming and old blisters healing. Similar to chickenpox, the time prior to healing or crusting of the blisters is the contagious stage of shingles. Once all of the blisters are crusted over, the virus can no longer be spread and the contagious period is over.

This is what I found, definitely talk to your doctor though!

You will develop an itchy rash. My hubby had it. We slept in same bed before he knew what it was. I never developed it. Doc told us that its contagious if you've never had chicken pox. Still call doc if you're worried tho but just wanted to let you know from experience...
