slightly enlarged yolk sac at 7 weeks

Does any one know for sure if an enlarged yolk sac is a definite sign of either a pending miscarriage or an abnormal baby? I just went to the doctor, had a couple of days of light pink spotting, gone now, but he did an ultrasound. The baby had a good heart beat, I am not having any pain at this time, but he said that the yolk sac was a little larger than what he liked to see it. I demanded to know what that might mean. He said, "I don't want to get into it too much because at this point I don't know." But my inquiring self had to know more and I demanded an answer again. He then said, "It could be a sign that you will miscarry, or it could be that there is something genetically wrong." I think he could tell I was freaked by the look on my face and said, "that is why I don't want to get into it too much, because right now I am not sure. I want to see you back in 2 weeks and we will do another ultrasound and go from there." Now I'm at home looking up things on the computer and freaking myself out even worse!!!! Can any one give me any positive feed back to may be ease my mind at least some?

this website has lots of information on enlarged yolk sac babies that made it full term as healthy babies.  it seems the heart rate is a much better indicator of health.

I would like to thank you too sweetangel7, for your post.

I have had the same problem, after 2 m/c I am now 9 weeks, but last week at a scan was told I had an enlarged uterus, but there was also a baby and a strong heartbeat.
I have been searching for some positive articles on this, so was extremely relieved to read your post.

I am going to see my ob-gyn tomorrow, so hopefully we will see that beautiful heartbeat again!

ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - Enlarged yolk sac

Question
You recently answered a question about a small yolk sac.  This question concerns an enlarged yolk sac.  My wife had an ultrasound last week at which time she was seven weeks pregnant.  The ultrasound showed a fetus with a heartbeat of 140 bps.  Then we got a call from the OB today telling us that there was an enlarged yolk sac so she wants to do another ultrasound in four weeks.  How concerned should we be that the enlarged sac will lead to a miscarriage?  Is it a risk or a likelihood?

Thanks for any info

Answer
As long as the sonogram showed a fetus with a good fetal heartbeat, the size of the yolk sac is insignificant, and will not cause a miscarriage. They merely want to confirm the growth of the pregnancy. An enlarged yolk sac is not an indication of an impending miscarriage. Don't worry.
