Srry I meant to add before I hit enter....the tear I sustained with my first is RARE. The first degree I received with my third baby is far more common and in my opinion is preferable to an episiotomy. There are several reasons my first tear was so bad and it's highly unlikely such a scenario will occur for you....if it were between a small tear and a cut, I'd choose the small tear.

I've had a 4th degree tear, a 1st degree tear, and an episiotomy...with my first delivery I tore so bad I nearly bled to death a d they had me in the OR stitching for an hour and a half. The recovery time was months..it was excruciating. With my second, I had an episiotomy because when they repaired my tear from my first baby, there was so little intact tissue they had to use medical mesh to piece it together and the mesh was keeping me from stretching..so he had to snip it and remove it..the episiotomy was painless. My epidural had stopped working so I was not numb when he made the cut and i barely felt it. It healed quickly and only needed two stitches. With that said...the first degree tear I had with my third baby, i didnt feel AT ALL and there was almost no healing time, with no stitches necessary.

There are very few legitimate reasons to have an episiotomy these days and most women won't need one. I will never get one again just because in most cases it is unnecessary....if you don't want one, express to your doctor that you don't want to be cut and that it is only acceptable in a life or deathscenario. You get to make the call..it's your body.

I had one with my first & tore with my second. With my first they had to cut me as far back as they could because she was face up. Neither is as horrible as everyone fears. They do get itchy but they make sprays for that & once they heal there is no discomfort even with sex.
