What can a U/S see at 5-6weeks?

Hi all,
So i guess I am asking a question on behalf of my best friend. She is really worried, because she found out last week that she is pg (YAY!!!) This is her second. The thing is about 7 weeks ago she had a period and 2 weeks later she had another, lighter one. She mentioned this to her dr and she said we would go by the first one. SO accroding to that she is 7weeks and 6days pg. She has had a lot of cramping the whole last week and ended up going to see her dr. She booked he in for U/S today. When she went, they couldnt really see anything. They said she would normally see a Yolk Sac at least, but that hadnt develped yet. So my friend mentioned the other period she had and that would make her 5weeks 6days today. The lady said, that sounded more realistic, but that she should still be able to see this yolk sac. Now I am not a specialist or anything, but my best friend is freaking out, thinking she is miscarrying, because of this. I really dont know what to do. Can anyone give us some advise? They have taken some test and will see if her hormone levels have doubled on Sunday. Untill then we can just sit and wait and I really hate seeing her so upset.
TIA!!!!

Thanks for the advice ladies! She has calmed down a little and accepted that all she can do is wait. Its just so strange because she has been cramping for nearly 2 weeks now... I dont know what it feels like when you miscarry, but i always assumed it would last a couple of days and then you bleed. she had no bleeding what so ever... I hope the baby is ok. she was so excited. they have been ttc for 8 months and really want a sybling for her 1yo....

I just had and U/S on thursday. I was a lil over 7 weeks, however, according to my dr., Im 4 days earlier than first thought, so I am actually a lil over 6 weeks. I was able to see the heart flicker and a small shape of the baby.

As long as she's not bleedin or cramping she should be fine... Tell her not to freak out... The Sac can be seen at 5 weeks yes, but fetal pole or heartbeat is usually not visable until between 6-8 weeks.... It's possible that second time she had a period is when she actually ovulated after that which would make her earlier than her Dr. is thinking.

at 4 weeks you should see a sac and fetal pole, 5 weeks a fetal pole sac and possible a heart beat near the end of the 5 weeks and 6 weeks you should see all three.

If she O later she should still see the fetal pole and sac by now. She needs to get it down with a real good us machine, if the dr does not have one then at a high risk OB. She could of mc and what they see is left or she for some reason is closer to 3 weeks for some reason. They need to do the HCG and like the other poster said it should double every 48 hours, that will tell if things are OK or not OK. and have a repeat scan

its possible that she may have ovulated later. at 6 weeks you wouls see a sac, some people see the fetal pole and others will see a heartbeat, everyone is different so there is no exact answer. as long as her levels are doubling every 48-72 hours it should be fine. Its funny how a matter of days can change a scan too, if she was to have a scan next week the chances are she'll see more then x
