Prometrium to prevent premature birth? (2nd preg) HELP!

HELP!

This is my second pregnancy. My first daughter was born premature at 32w 6 days. My membranes ruptured (no cause was determined) and my daughter is now 4 and in great health. My doctor prescribed PROMETRIUM, 2 capsules to be taken intra-vaginaly, every day from week 18 to 32.

I know Prometrium is primarily prescribed to women having trouble convceiving or having repeated mc. I did have a mc before my daughter and it does take at least 8 months for us to get pg in the first place but I have NEVER heard of Prometrium being taken after the first trimester. In fact it is usually NOT recommended during pregnancy since it can lead to birth defect (at least that's what I have found out).

I can't contact my doc before wednesday and I am VERY concerned about starting this right away (technically I will be 18 weeks tomorrow, Tuesday).

MY QUESTION : Has anyone been prescribed Ptometrium after the first trimester? Is it dangerous for the baby? I think he prescribed it to strengthen my uterine lining and/or my cervix but will this really help?

Thank you!

I took prometrium to help me not MC with my 3rd pregnancy, but only in the begining of the pregnancy, I was later put ona different type of medication to keep me from contracting until 36 weeks. i had a happy healthy little boy who has had no side effect that are apparent (he is now 2). if your concerned call your Dr office even if you don't have an appointment they can discus your concerns witht the medication over the phone or get you in sooner!

I am currently 8w4d  (3rd pregnancy) and on progestrone suppositories.. my doc said to end about 12 weeks.  I went into labor at 19weeks with daughter - held off in hospital complete bedrest until 32 weeks.. Son I had a cerclage... and bed rest 20 weeks to 28weeks.  Stich pulled at 35 weeks... he would not budge... c section at 39 weeks.  If you are not comfortable - get a second opinion....maybe contact a high risk dr for a consult...

The only thing that I know about Prometrium is that I was prescried it when I was four weeks pregnant, and then taken off after I was 3 months pregnant. However I have also read that the medication shouldn't be taken at all during pregnancy and I did express these concerns to my doc. I was taking a pill once every night. My doc said that I needed the meds because the baby would not survive if my progesterone levels were not right.

There is a specific type of progesterone injection that is being used every week until the last month of pregnancy.  It has been associated with a lowering of the incidence of preterm birth.

however, it is not the drug Prometrium.  I'm speaking of an injectable drug, known as
17 Hydroxyprogesterone.

well i just went into early labor on sept. 23,2009 and unfortanatley my boys only survived for a week...but to get to the point...if you dont feel right taking them dont and ask your doctor for an alternative. Well my doctor said that other than it being common to go into early labor is common but he said i have a weak cervix so he recommands me getting a cerclage they stich ur cervix on the 3rd month that prevents going into early labor. and he says it always works.look up online to reead exactly what a cerclage is and ask your doctor if that would be the right thing for you. hope it helps.
