He is trying so hard to have a bowel movement. he is 3 1/2 weeks old. We have tried a little water, and watered down apple juice. He cries and screams when he tries to go to . He went Sat. am about 3 and it was not a lot. We have changed him from breast milk, to enfamil to similac. What can we do now.

Have you spoken to your Doctor about this, My twins sons (10 weeks old) were born 12 weeks early and they had unusually small anuses for their age. They ended up having surgery at just 30 weeks (2 weeks old) but each day I have to do anal dilatations to ensure their muscles stretch and grow.

This could be the problem with your son, it is called anorectal malformations.

The dilatations did not seem a pleasant option but it is better than a stoma and my boys are doing well :)

to help out immediatly you can put KY on a rectal themomoter and  use as if you were going to do a rectal themp. it will help strech the anus so it doesn'r hurt so much. i would gently and very lightly stretch it while going until done. but you really need to figure out the cause. he may have an impaction up in there and until that is gone he may have problems. don't let i go. the rectal thing sounds really gross but it does help them from hurting so much.

The only thing i can suggest is coloxyl for babys you can buy it over the counter at the chemist. My niece has had constipation problems since she was about two weeks. They use one drop in every bottle ever since she started on this not a problem with constipation anymore.

my son was having the same problem...but 5 months and 2 months adj. anywas i tried everything also...but he was on a high calorie formula (26) he just recently went down to 24 cal. neosure formula...but my ped. told me to use pediatric gleciren supporties..you can find them in any grocery isle..or pharmacy you dont need a script for them...i was told to cut it in half and use every 3-4 days....it has worked...once i put it in..he goes with in minutes...you can also try prune juice..not apple...good luck.
