Brown semen

I recently turned 53 and I've noticed at first were a bit of blood in my semen now it's brown but not all the time.  It goes away then comes back.  Is this normal for guys my age?  What causes it?

Not normal but common. Usually related to prostatic stones or a low grade infection. RARELY a serious issue.

Still, worth getting checked by a urologist. DRE, PSA and maybe an Ultrasound.

If he does an U/S I suspect he will see prostate stones which are benign.

Good luck!
