Letting out the gas is the best thing that could happen. Eating light like jello, broth, and no dairy yet. Some soy milk is ok. You can double or triple the dulcolax {I did}. They gave me milk of magnesia with the dulcolax. Gravity is the best help soon after surgery. Walking and sitting up will get the bowel working within 4 or 5 days max. Dont let him over eat even after the first movement. Don't be afraid to call the doc.
