probono keloid removal

I am an African-American female with large keloids taking over both of my earlobes. I am a college student and my current medical insurance does not cover the cost of keloid removals, it is considered cosmetic surgery.  I don't think anyone can truely imagine how it feels to walk around in a society so uptight about outward apperances, to understand how uncomfortable and embarrassing it is to live with these keloids.  I feel like damage goods! I can't wear earrings, or tie my hair back, because I don't want them to be front and center when people look at me.

I am interested in finding any surgeron to take on my case as a probono situation. Are there study groups to be involved in?

Dr. Corey L. Hartman in Birmingham, AL is the doctor that treated my keloids on the back of my head. He may be able to help you. I don't know if he does pro bono work but it's worth a shot because he is brilliant and genuine. I've seen a few Derms. about my problem over several years and he finally saved me from my physical pain and psychological distress. He was incredibly knowledgable about my keloids and inflammation and he reassured me that the psychological damages were, in fact, legitimate. And because of him my suffering ended.

I can tell you that keloids will react poorly with surgery in many instances. I would recommend at first that you seek out a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon to consider silicone pressure sheets or steroid injections.

I have had two treatments of the steroid injections. Through online research, it says that best results come from having the removal surgery followed by pressure sheet earrings and in some cases radiation sessions.

My keloids are too large now to not have them surgerically removed. Had I realized what was forming behind my earlobe sooner I may have been able to stop them.

I wouldn't worry about what others think of the way you look. You just have to ignore the stupid comments and looks of others. I have dealt with many people who ask "what happened to you?" or other comments like "man you got messed up." I have some large scars from surgery and the last surgery left me with my right thigh smaller than the left one. Many people ask me about it, but they're just curious, which is normal. It has taken me a little while to become comfortable with the way I look, but I'm finally there. I wear shorts all of the time, showing off my large scars and small thigh. Show it off, you are beautiful just the way you are. : )
