I am very sorry that your father is sick.Im kind going thru something with my breathing right now.I suggest your father go to a pulmonary doctor also,A lung function test can tell u a lot and maybe ask for a ct scan of the chest?i am on oxygen and sometimes when im not wearing it I forget things too. GOD bless you on this journey.
Sorry to hear of your father's problems. I may be able to clarify a few things for you. People that smoke for long periods of time, lose elasticity of there lungs making breathing very difficult. Air can get it in but breathing out is harder. Hence you may notice your father taking short breaths and trying hard to breathe out.
We determined that oximetry readings of 88-92% (altitude 5000 feet) is considered a normal range without oxygen, in long time smokers. There could be a few tests that could actually help your doctor make a determination: Full (Body) Pulmonary Function Test and a carboxyhemoglobin / arterial blood gas test.
Low oxygen levels can contribute to: disorientation and other odd behavior are common results of this. She may also exhibit signs of dementia, like forgetting names, people, etc.
Talk to your doctor about pulmonary rehabilitation as well, these programs have a great success rate.
