Can't breathe

Hi. On monday night I was trying to go to sleep and I started having trouble breathing. I couldn't get a full breathe in. Or that is what it felt like. Sometimes I can but I always feel like my lungs are tight. It has continued for three days now. I am 18 and have been smoking for a year and a half, though I am trying to quit. I recently got off a steroid for eczema and an antibiotic for staff. Usually I can breathe best in the day, it doesn't even really bother me. In fact even during weight lifting and other activities I feel fine. However around 9 or 10 every night it gets bad and I have difficulty breathing. It is also hard to burp. I am going to go to the doctor on Monday if it doesn't clear up. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Or how i could fix it?

Hello and hope you are doing well.

The symptoms mentioned by you could be due to Asthma. It is a disease affecting the lungs causing narrowing of the airways, usually due to an allergic reaction to triggering factors. Therapy is with bronchodilators which cause the airways to dilate. Your symptoms could also be due to COPD. You will need to consult your doctor. He may even ask for blood test and an X ray. Lung function tests could further help in evaluation.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Both antibiotics and steroids result in the overgrowth of Candida albicans, a naturally occurring yeast. It can cause bloating and gas. This may press on  your diaphragm and make breathing more difficult. To ease the bloating get over-the-counter simethicone. A common brand is Gas-X. It is effective and works fast. Meanwhile cut back on sugars and starches, favorite foods of candida.
