What is wrong with me?

Hi! I'm a 43 yrs female. I have a bad cough with phlegm and sometimes coughing with red blood. I'm gaining weight (still increasing), experiencing fatigue/easily feel tired/feels sleepy.  Also sometimes having colds and sore throat. Previously I also have pain in my left side/chest even painful when breathing and sweating at night.

I have been to few doctors but they could not give a diagnosis (inconclusive). The hospital even thought I have TB (Chest X-ray shows left side with white area) and so was given TB medicines (the nurses said this medicines could kill all). Several tests was also taken e.g. sputum, blood, CAT scan, bronscopy but all were negative/inconclusive.  FYI, I have not done the lung biopsy yet (seems frightening especially when the doctors said there could be complications).

So, what is wrong with me? Any info/help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Mary

Hi! Thanks for your concern and for asking. To answer your Qs: 1) 1st x-ray only showed a small white area (before taking the TB drugs), 2nd & 3rd showed the area had enlarged (after taking the TB drugs for nearly 2 mths - it was discontinued after no improvement); 2) The symptoms were since 2006, the coughing gets much better after I took birdnest drink (traditional chinese drink which is said good for the lungs - after the discontinuation of the TB drugs) and also lots of vitamins (the doctor only gave the normal medicines e.g. cough syrup, for the cold, fever & antibiotics). 3) Yes I
had fever too, normally in the evening/night. I'm not sure what you meant by high or low grade. 4) About the weight gain (very sure - I am a woman :-) we keep tab of this kind of thing), actually, it started with my normal weight range then I started to loose weight after taking the TB drugs - the nurses would take the measurement everyday (and also my hair too - even by just touching/running over them). I did gain some weight after several months as also my hair. 5) Yes, sputum was cultured for TB - it was negative. 6) Montoux test was also done - again negative. 7) No, the TB drugs were stop (see no: 1), my symptoms were getting worst and that is why the CT scans and bronscopy were done.

FYI, I was actually warded at the hospital for the lung biopsy, however the day I was due for the biopsy the machine broke down (higher intervention?).  I did enquired the hospital/lab several times for a new appointment but they said they were still waiting for the spare part replacement. As time goes by I have forgotten all about it especially when I felt I am getting much better due to the alternative medicines. Only when those symptoms seem to get back that I started to get worried again especially the coughing with blood (so far no pain yet). It seems hopeless when you don't know what you're suffering from and nowadays it's very stressful even when I have a mild cough. The thing is when I get sick, it will take some time for me to get better and this will really disrupt my life and work. I feel depressed.  Anybody got any answer for me?

Hi marry,i can understand your apprehention as no conclusive diagnosis have been made till date and lung biopsy can have its own complications. I would like to know few things:
1. What did the Chest X-ray report medically said about white area on left side?
2.For how long did you have these symptoms?
3. Did you had fever also. If yes, whether it was high grade or low grade? whether it was more in morning or evening?
4. Are you sure about your weight gain?
5.Was sputum culture for tuberculosis done?
6. Was montoux test done?
7. Are you still on antitubercular drugs? If yes, your symptoms have improved or not?
I think, i have asked lot many questions?
