Two years ago I had an extra marital relationship with a woman in Asia while working abroad. She was also in a long term relationship and was experiencing relationship troubles stemming from a miscarriage and other relationship issues. After the encounter I experienced a variety of symptoms including slightly itchy urethra followed by intermittent back, leg, hip, groin, and knee pain all on the left side. I tested for STDs with a 10 panel test(covering HIV, herpes, syphilis, hepatitis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea) at 4 weeks all results were negative. I visited a doctor at five weeks. He was mostly convinced it was just paranoia and guilt due to the negative test. He prescribed Levofloxacin as a precautionary measure. My symptoms continued so I retested again at 9 weeks with the same 10 panel test and added a test for trichomoniasis. Again, all results were negative at this time I also took 1500 mg of azithromycin that had been previously prescribed by a travel doctor. At 11 weeks post encounter, I experienced a bad 10 day fever (102-104) with excruciating headaches and night sweats. I visited the doctor again he was convinced it was only the flu. The urinary issues subsided after the 9 week test but the intermittent left side back, leg, hip, left side lower abdominal pain(they never all hurt at the small and time) continues to this day. The bouts of aches and pains occur less frequently and vary in intensity usually just a dull ache. Also over this period I noticed a small lumpy mass behind my left testicle and in my mind all of this pain is radiating from this point. I have visited two doctors about it and both brushed it off as varicocele and unrelated back pain due to weight gain. They said the pain would be much more intense and constant if it were an infection. Fast forward to a few months ago, my wife and I who have mended our relationship were expecting a child. She was 10 weeks along but the fetus had stopped developing about halfway through and she later had a miscarriage. She has had no noticeable symptoms prior to this miscarriage but I can’t help but think it may be related to my previous undiagnosed issues and this prior sexual encounter. Any thoughts about what this could be? Is this all coincidental. What follow up tests should I take? We would like to attempt to have a child again now that she has recovered and I don’t want to repeat this traumatic experience again.
