Bactorial Vaginosis

A26
Hi, I have Bactorial Vaginosis, and they gave my some antibiotics, Metronidazole, but the nurse told me you cannot drink alcohol at all while taking this medication, so I wanna wait until after the New Year like either Sunday or Monday, to start taking it. Is that a problem to wait to take it, the nurse said it was fine to wait, But I just wanted to know, it won't make the infection worse will it waiting 5 or 6 days to start taking the medication??
Does Metronidazole affect your menstrual period, making it start earlier or later?
Please, if you could answer these questions for me!
Thank you much!

Hi I'm using the metrogel and I was wondering if it messes with my menstrual because I usually have regular period but since using the metrogel, I hv red clumps discharge instead of a full period. It only comes down when I urinate and doesn't touch my sanitary napkin

usually the chunkies start a few days after you are done with the medication. discharge a month later is a good reason to be seen again for proper testing.

you have a post on the herpes forum already that we can talk about your hsv2 status in - follow up there - thanks!

How long after taking metronidazole (oral) do the "chunkies" occur? I took this for BV early in December and noticed now (after using an internal sex toy-not something I have done for a long time)  lots of very solid non smelling whitish chunks. Yuck- but at least there wasn't an odor.  What is the relation of BV and hsv2?  Is BV considered an STD?

your regular doctor can order the testing to be done.

usually if you need more than birth control, it's time for a gyn and not just your regular family medicine/general practitioner to deal with the issue.

ok, is that something just a regular doctor can check, because i don't have a gyn doctor?

there are non-std causes of pid correct.

you should discuss your period issues with your gyn. they might want to do an ultrasound to check for fibroids in your uterus.

oh, because when i clicked the pid link and was reading up on it, I thought the way it sounded PID is an std, but I didn't think it was. So if you have PID, it's not an std, can you get PID without having had chlamydia or gonorrhea?
The symptoms just some of them sounded like it could be a possiblity, but I haven't had chlamydia or gonorrhea, just the BV.
Like the spotting, frequent urination, esp at night, i urinate and still feel like i have to pee sometimes, or I really do have to pee again alot at night it is kind of annoying. I have had some pelvic pain, but not alot I don't think. I get real bad menstrual cramps, and seems to be a lot of blood clots when I have my menstrual period, if that's what there called. So is PID something you think I should or shouldn't have checked when I go to the doctor?

typically pid is caused by chlamydia or gonorrhea. we don't really consider pid itself to be a std.

I called and got a doctors appt Jan. 17th, but I was looking on this board I didn't realize that PID is an STD?
I wanted to have the doctor check for that when I go, I saw spotting can be a symptom, I also have had frequent urination more so at night. Is that something they can check for without doing a laproscopy?

no, because i had a doctors appt, before the spotting started, and i actually went to the health dept and that's where they told me I had bactorial Vaginosis. The spotting started after I saw my doctor. And now I can't back go to my doctor yet, because I am going to prob be starting my menstrual period soon, and wouldn't the doctor have to examine that area?

odds are it's something else causing it.

did you mention the spotting issues with your doctor?

I'm taking the medication now for the BV, but I know I asked u this but I'm just not sure what is causing this spotting, I have been having spotting now on and off for a couple wks, but I don't know if spotting is caused because of the Bactorial Vaginosis or do you think this something else? Thanks

actually the "chunkies" after using metrogel is usually dead bacteria being expelled from the body and not actually yeast. Many folks wrongly assume it's yeast because it's white and clumpy and treat without proper testing.  I always recommend waiting a full week after finishing treatment with metronidazole before being tested for yeast so you can get properly tested and not diagnosed based on the discharge.

it's very easy to test for bv. if you are being accurately tested for bv and are told you don't have it, no reason to think that you do. if they are just visually looking at you and saying no bv, whole different story.

Just an FYI... Taking Metronidazole usually causes a yeast infection afterwards. If you notice that you have one after taking the antibiotics it is normal. I also had a question for you. How long will you be taking the Metronidazole and what tests did your doctor run in diagnosing you with BV? The reason I ask is because I have symptoms very similar to BV however every Dr. I go to suggest that I don't have it.

you'd have to check with your pharmacist to know if there are interactions between them. typically if you are getting all your prescriptions filled at the same location, they let you know when there are potential drug interactions.

Okay, one more question, thank you so much for helping, if I want to take my muscle relaxer, it is called Flexeril, tonight like right now, should I wait to start taking the Metronidazole, tomorrow morning like around 8:00 am? Is that a problem, to take those medications, and if not, should I then wait 2 start the antibiotic in the am tomorrow like at 8:00?
Thank for all ur help!

waiting a few days isn't an issue healthwise but my theory on it is, you know you have an infection so treating it promptly and properly is in your best interest more so than drinking on the holiday!

no, the antibiotic doesn't make your period come early.

Also, if I wanted to wait though til Sat or Sun 2 start taking the medication, BV isn't life threatening is it? Because the nurse practitioner who works at the std clinic told me I could wait till after New Yrs to take it? Does BV do any damage?

it's better to take it and avoid alcohol . the longer you don't treat your bv, the harder it is to get rid of and the more miserable you feel. also don't have any sex while you are taking it either - bv increases your risk of acquiring a std if you don't have a partner who's std status you are aware of.    fyi - you try to drink alcohol while on the medication, you will end up  in the ER. it makes you extremely ill.

you can treat bv while you have your period. don't use tampons when you have bv. they trap the bacteria up in you longer!

bv can cause irritation that can cause some spotting.
