Epididymitis

My high school aged son told us that he was having a lot of pain in his testicle. It was swollen and very painful to the touch. I took him to our family dr who sent us to the ER (because of the time of day, no drs were available). The ER did an ultrasound to rule out torsion. They also did urine tests. He was having no pain when he urinated. He says that the last time he had sex was almost 1.5 years ago when he last had a girlfriend and that this pain is out of the blue. The ER dr gave him a shot of antibiotics and 12 pills to swallow. He told me that, based on what my son said, this looks like epididymitis that is found similar in women as a UTI. But he then said that the infection is not in his urethra, but farther back. They sent off a DNA urine sample to be tested. He said that the antibiotics they were giving him would cover the infection AND possible STD infections since he had previously been sexually active. My question is this: would a STD stay dormant that long before presenting itself this way? And is it normal for a dr to prescribe that much antibiotics without knowing if it was in fact a STD? They had already taken a urine sample prior to the antibiotics. I am aware that they don't have to tell me what the results were, and my child (who is very open with us) says that he doesn't see how this could be a STD since we had him tested when we found out that he had sex with his previous girlfriend and it came back negative. I'm just worried that my child could have something that no one will tell us about. Even though the dr said it looks (based on what my son said) like it was just a normal UTI-type infection, I'm concerned about giving him a shot of antibiotics and two different sets of pill-form antibiotics. But they didn't send home a prescription for a longer course of antibiotics. Also, since we were in the ER, where do we go to find out if this was actually a STD since that is what he was running that last urine sample for? And is such a strong, one-time round of antibiotics enough to get my child out of so much pain? Any information you can give this scared mom will be appreciated.

This is a volunteer forum, you have to understand we are not here 24/7.

STD's are never dormant, you have the infection just without symptoms. Most of your questions are better for a Dr to be answering. You can call the ER/hospital for results and talk to your GP on the treatment.

This could be a STD, but I am assuming probably not based on some statements you have made about son being open and already having testing.

One other thing, about six months ago, he had the same symptoms with the swelling and pain, but it went away after about three days. This time, it returned with a vengence.

He does heavy lifting with his part-time job and is in perfect health other than this.
