HSV-2 Esophagitis

In late 2006 I was diagnosed with Herpetic (HSV-2) Esophagitis via endoscopy when I was having trouble swallowing (among other symptoms).  I am not immune compromised and was referred to an ID doc for good measure.  He ran a series of tests and placed me on Valtrex for 14 days just for good measure.  (none of the tests were abnormal and he said I had a clean bill of health (besides the new HSV infection).  He did not put me on any type of suppressive therapy post the 14 days on Valtrex and I have not had any subsequent "outbreaks" that I know of.  I have scoured the web for information on this rare infection and have come up with little answers.  The docs also had little information to offer in terms of transmitting the virus to partners.  I have recently started a relationship and want to provide my partner with as much information as possible.  From most of the information I have found it seems that my immune system will keep this "in check" and it will not reappear.  Does that mean it's not shedding?  If it is, can I spread it through oral sex?  Does the virus travel in my semen when it's located in this region of my body?  At some point I would like to have unprotected sex with my partner once we have both been thoroughly tested for other STDs and are confirmed to be in a monogamous relationship.  I am also concerned about spreading it to my family when kissing them on the cheek.

Thanks

Hi, I have the same question(s).  Unfortunately, I've been unsuccessful in finding your response on the webmd forum.  Here's my question:

Six month ago, I was diagnosed with Herpetic Esophagitis via endoscopy when I was having trouble swallowing (among other symptoms).  Biopsy revealed HSV1 and HSV2.  I am not immune compromised and have an otherwise clean bill of health (besides the HSV infection).  My doctor prescribed Acyclyvir (400mg) and I have not had any subsequent "outbreaks".  Furthermore, I have not had any sores or blisters on my lips or genitals.

Will future outbreaks be limited to my esophagus (local to the original outbreak site)?  Or is there potential for outbreaks elsewhere?  I'm also interested in information on transmission of HSV (1 & 2) in cases of herpetic esophagitis. Can I spread the virus when performing oral sex? Or through genital contact?

I am also concerned about spreading it to my family when kissing them on the cheek.

Thanks

I believe you also asked this on the webmd herpes forum correct? Terri and I have both answered this there.

Hi there -

You should post this in the experts forum for a better answer than I can give you.  Unfortunately, it costs $15, but I can promise you a better answer.

To find the experts forum, click on the STDs link in the Related Experts Forums box on the right side of this page.  I look forward to reading the response.
