HSV 2 Results

Hello,

I have an interesting situation. I have known about type-specific igg tests for years, and have included them in every one of my std screenings. Since the tests first became available I have been getting tested, and every time tested negative. That has been over a period of about 9 years at least.I was recently diagnosed as having HSV 2 through iGg testing. I have yet to see lab results.

In January of 07, I tested negative, and in November of 07, I tested positive, I have had the same partner, we were monagamous, and he too has just taken the test.( We don't know his results yet).

I had first become sexually active with him in August of 06, so I'm a bit confused about the window, considering that I had a negative result in January of 07. His partner prior to me was just tested, and got her results back today. They were negative.

Needless to say, I haven't had any outbreaks that I know of, and wonder if there is any chance that this might be a mistake. When I asked my dr. about the next steps, and tried to get medication, I was told to wait, that medication wasn't necessary right now. Well, if the test results shown are positive, why wouldn't I be put on medication? I also asked to either be read the lab results, as well as having them sent to me in the mail. I have yet to see them.

My question is, should I be retested as a result of this confusion? I have had history with visual diagnosis of this virus before, and they're was no culture, or blood tests performed at that time. I lived for a few years thinking I had this virus, and the Dr that supposedly diagnosed me put me on medication that day. Once type specific blood tests became available, is when I finally learned that this was not the case. As you can see I'm completely confused.

Any assistance or opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

acutally a 1.9 hsv2 igg result is too low to consider positive without first doing additional testing to confirm it. Considering that you've tested negative until that point and your partner is also hsv2 negative - it's most likely a false positive.

If your doctor uses quest labs - you want the herpes inhibition assay - test # 17170 done to see if it's a false positive or not. Your other option is to get your doctor to order up a herpes WB test from the U of washington - http://depts.washington.edu/rspvirus/herpes.htm  is their website with all the info on it for your doctor.

Grace,
The reason I have taken so long to get back with you was because I was waiting on results. Well my partner has tested negative on Type 2 Igg AB test! His results are as follows:
HSV Type 2- Specific IGg
HSV II IGg, Type Spec: >0.9

This is where things get really interesting. As I mentioned before, our  physical relationship  began  in August of 2006. In January of 2007,  my results for the HSV Type 2- Specific IGg were negative. Then in November of 2007, I tested positive. Keep in mind he took his test about a week after my last test, so we have plenty of time for accurate results. I was finally able to acquire my test results from the lab, my result reads as: HSV II IGg, Type Spec 1.9H.

How could this happen? Doesn't the infection have to come from somewhere. I have had no other exposure, and he's been my only partner. I have taken the liberty of doing confirmatory testing with the Herpeselect through Quest Diagnostics. I ordered both 1 and 2 type specific tests. I am confused, as I have spent the last 9- 10 years including true specific type testing in my anuual exams, and std screenings. This was for my own peace of mind, as well as trying to protect those I loved. I tried to know, and always be responsible and aware of my status to say the least. It's amazing how long I've been taking these tests, only to end up getting a positive result with no reasonable explantion.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks. :)

If you can get a copy of your blood test results and post the numerical results I can better help you.

Your past visual diagnosis of hsv of course further complicates this whole situation.  When did you stop taking antivirals?
