Could I have Herpes!?!?

I was having a conversation with my significant other earlier today (Sunday). It was about something I experienced many years ago, 1990 to be exact. Not important how the topic came up, but there was a good reason. I will add that she is a nurse, and her opinion is one I value. But I would still like another opinion.

I revealed to her, that back in 1990 I had an episode where my penis itched like crazy internally. It was so bad for awhile, that I had to grab it the long way and grind my fingers into it to gain relief. It went away eventually, in about 2 weeks I think. But she told me, that she thinks I had a herpes outbreak. And that she thinks it may have gone dormant ever since, and that I may be a carrier. I have never had any sores on my genital area, and I don't even get cold sores. And I haven't had anything that resembled an STD since. But I do believe what I did have was an STD, because I was with someone around that time who is known for getting around a bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I don't want her to think I'm tainted, she is the love of my life. I of course think she is mistaken, based on some stuff I have read. But I want to get to the bottom of this somehow.

Symptoms are subjective and can be anything. Simple test for hsv 1 and 2 will give you a definite result. No ifs no buts it will give you the answer your looking for.
