what has similar symptoms to herpes?

Right now I'm experiencing some sores in my vaginal area, itching, pain with urination, and a fever. All signs are pointing to herpes but I wanted to know if there is something else this could be?

oh...one more thing. if you see a doctor and they believe that it is herpes, you can get meds and hopefully some relief!

It could be herpes, staph, folliculitis, etc.

It does sound like herpes, so you need to get to the doctor soon.  The sooner you go, the better your chances of getting an accurate diagnosis from the doctor.  When you call for an appt, tell them you have sores that need to be cultured, and need to be seen as soon as possible.  Ideally, this will happen within 24-48 hours of getting the sores.  If your doc says it will be next week or something, call Planned Parenthood or an std clinic.

When they culture you, ask them to do a type specific culture.  This will save you a lot of headache down the road.  You can read more about herpes testing in the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com.  About 30-50% of new genital herpes infections are now due to type 1 (from oral sex with someone who has oral hsv1 - think cold sores), and the transmission rates for your partners are different for type 1 and 2.

did you recently have contact with someone say within the last 3 weeks?

you need to go to the doctor immediately to get the sores cultured. waiting will only make it more difficult to diagnose.
